ISLAMABAD (NNI) - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that Pakistan is fighting terrorism together with the United States and "it is a combined effort", which means "if Pakistan fails, the US will also fail".
Terming terrorism a global fight, with Pakistan on the frontline, the Prime Minister said the country has made a lot of sacrifices - not just in terms of casualties but also in terms of economy. The Prime Minister expressed hope that "by now the US is convinced that we are part of the solution to terrorism, not part of the problem".
Terrorism has neither boundaries nor ideology, it is meant only to destabilise and it has no support in Pakistan, Gilani said. "Because it (terrorism) is a foreign agenda and is sponsored from abroad. Drug money is behind terrorism in Pakistan," the rt.com quoted the Prime Minister as saying.
As for American drone strikes in the Pakistani territory, the Prime Minister said that Islamabad has been successful in separating local tribes from militants. The local tribes now support the central government, but drone attacks killing innocent civilians on the ground help create sympathy for terrorists among the locals, PM Gilani added. "It is not in favour of either military or political strategy. They make our work difficult," he pointed out, adding that Pakistan can do the job itself. Answering a question about extending American military presence in the country, Gilani insisted that there should be respect for the sovereignty and integrity of Pakistan.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are closely cooperating in their joint fight against militants, but the border between the countries is too long and proper security is something to be desired, largely because Pakistan has been accepting refugees from Afghanistan for the last 30 years. The PM said relations between the border districts of the two countries are now too complicated. About conspiracy theories, the PM said Pakistan's nuclear programme is very secure and recognised by the international community and the country's authorities intend to keep it that way.
Russia and Pakistan have had strategic relations since 1948 and despite ups and downs after the 9/11 tragedy, both countries have a common strategy in fighting extremism and terrorism, he added. Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Saturday agreed to establish two-tier Afghanistan-Pakistan Joint Commission for facilitating and promoting reconciliation and peace. The commission reflects a positive change in bilateral relations as now Afghan leadership recognised Islamabad's role in the reconciliation process when the American troops are set to begin withdrawal of its forces in July and Afghan forces will gradually take over the security responsibility.

How will the US fail, if Pakistan falters? Pakistan needs to do a lot in order to eliminate the mess it is in and prove that it is a country with legitimate concerns. Firstly, dismantle the ISI - elements within which are creating a state within a state. Secondly, veto administrative & foreign policy powers of the PA, if there are any, which means restrict the PA into defending Pakistan - which is and should be PA's primary objective. Thirdly, stop nurturing terrorists sympathetic to the cause of Kashmir. As about Mr. Gilani's statement that terrorism is a foreign agenda and sponsored from abroad - Pakistan must introspect, for the rot lies within.

P.S. the timing of Mr. Gilani's statement, as and when Obama decided to run for the White House again.

LOL hahhahahah man these pakistanis have crossed all level of Delusion and mass dementia....pakistan is already Failed, however pakistan's corps is on American life support (shameless Dollar bhik/zakat), which fuels the loud mouths of these "pakistan studies and islamic studies" (il) literate and thankless pious "kaum/awam"......The day US stops giving bhik to these terrorist and freaks, that will be the day US could plough back Billions into its education and healthcare sector; therefore doing some good and constructive for its citizens, rather than spending money on feeding savages and barbarians!

I think its the other way round. If US fails, so will Pakistan.
If Pakistan fails, the going may get tougher for US and the international community.
But if US fails, there is no one else to fail or pass in the terror epicenter. It will become a mud puddle for India, Pakistan, China, Iran and Russia with limited capacity, limited and counter productive strategic agendas and no foreseeable unity in action.

Lets hope US gets out of there with a good performance and afghans could stand on their feet again. The least anyone drags in that mud puddle the better it is for them.

Regards,
Virendra
