IDF captures Iranian ship carrying advanced rockets for Gaza

Cargo of Iranian made long-range missiles were captured en route to Sudan in daring open sea operation, in which elite navy unit raided the vessel

Israel seized an Iranian ship carrying advanced weapons destined for Gaza on Tuesday night and towed it to Eilat port, the IDF said Wednesday. Elite troops from the Israel Navy's Shayetet 13 unit boarded the ship in open waters on the maritime border of Sudan and Eritrea, some 1,500 km south of Israel.

The Klos C Iranian vessel was sailing under a Panamanian flag, making its way to Sudan from Iran carrying a cargo of advanced rockets capable of reaching distances of up to 200 km.

'Rows of Iranian rockets' said found on seized ship

Israeli troops in Eilat unloaded Sunday morning some 150 containers, suspected of holding illicit Iranian arms, from a ship seized several days earlier in the Red Sea.

Israeli officials plan on inspecting the containers taken off the 'Klos-C' over the next several days, and are expected to uncover more munitions like the medium-range missiles the army says it already found in an initial search.

Naval commandos seized the vessel on Wednesday in the Red Sea between Eritrea and Sudan, and it was escorted into Eilat on Saturday by two Israeli warships.

The IDF said it was carrying an Iranian shipment of M-302 rockets destined for the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

Israel has hailed the discovery of the shipment as exposing Iranian efforts to support global terrorism.

"Each one of these rockets poses a threat to the safety of the citizens of Israel — each bullet and each rocket that was discovered had an Israeli address," he said.'

Israel and the US coordinated intelligence and military activities leading up to Israel's seizure of the "Klos-C" off the coast of Port Sudan, US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro and the State Department said Wednesday.

Actually they should be natural allies in the region & beyond. Iranian policy defies logic. Well the only logic that justifies it is one upmanship between Sunnis and Shias

Israel PM calls on EU to confront Iran on missiles

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israel's prime minister is calling on the European Union's foreign policy chief, currently visiting Tehran, to confront Iranian officials about the weapons Israel says it caught last week en route from Iran to militants in Gaza.

Catherine Ashton is in Tehran to further negotiations with Iran about its nuclear program.

At the beginning of a weekly Cabinet meeting Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel's capture last week of a ship carrying the weapons serves to "expose Iran's real face."

Israel is preparing a public display of the cargo, said to include advanced rockets, hoping to pressure world powers as they negotiate with Tehran.

Officials in Iran and Gaza have denied any connection to the shipment.

Upon the ship's arrival at the Eilat port, IDF elite combat engineers and Navy soldiers began scanning the ship's containers and extracting the dozens of long-ranged M-302 missiles destined for Gaza.

US, UK urge UN probe of Iranian arms ship seizure

The United States and Britain on Thursday called for a UN investigation of Israel's claim that it intercepted an Iranian shipment of rockets headed for the Gaza Strip.

UN officials have said that if Israel's claims are true, Iran would be in violation of Security Council sanctions.

US deputy ambassador Rosemary DiCarlo urged the Security Council committee that monitors sanctions against Iran to investigate the incident. She said "the committee should be prepared to impose real consequences, such as possible sanctions designations on those responsible."

British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant called for a similar investigation.

"This is not the first time that we have seen reports of potential arms transfers to Gaza involving Iran," Lyall Grant noted.

The envoys spoke after a council briefing on the sanctions committee's latest report.

The report said Iran had still not replied to inquiries last year on two other incidents: Iran's launches of Shahab 1 and 3 missiles and an intercepted arms shipment in Yemen.

Australia's UN Ambassador Gary Quinlan, who chairs the committee, said it continues to call on Iran to provide explanations.

The Klos C was captured by the Israeli Navy earlier this month in open waters on the maritime border of Sudan and Eritrea, some 1,500 km south of Israel.

The vessel was sailing under a Panamanian flag, making its way to Sudan from Iran carrying a cargo of advanced rockets capable of reaching distances of up to 200 km.

The IDF found 40 M-302 long-range missiles, as well as 181 22-milimeter mortar shells and 400,000 7.62 bullets on board the ship.

The rockets originated in Syria, the IDF said, where Iran is known to store large arsenals. The rockets were flown from Syria to Iran, where they were loaded on the ship that then departed for Iraq where the arms were concealed in boxes of cement.
