Pilot of downed Pakistan Air Force F-16 Shahaz-ud-Din mistaken for Indian airman, lynched by Nowshera mob

New Delhi: Even as Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman walked across the India-Pakistan border on 1 March, a family in Pakistan is in mourning — silent, blacked out from the public view, their sacrifice unacknowledged. Pakistan Air Force Wing Commander Shahaz-ud-Din, the F-16 pilot shot down in a dogfight over the Nowshera sector, is reported to have been lynched by a mob who mistook him for an Indian airman.

Both men, in one of those strange twists history revels in, come from illustrious military families: Wing Commander Varthaman’s father, S Varthaman, as Air Marshal; Shahaz-ud-Din’s father, Waseem-ud-Din, is also an Air Marshal of the Pakistan Air Force, who has flown F-16 and Mirages.

Remains of the Pakistani fighter jet which crashed on 28 February. ANI

The two sons engaged each other in the air; one was taken a prisoner of war and has returned home, while the other was killed by his own people.

The goddess of war, it is said, is fickle with her favours — but few twists of fate exist in the annals of history to match this one.The news that Shahaz-ud-Din's plane was shot down was first reported by London-based lawyer Khalid Umar, who says he received it privately, from individuals related to the F-16 pilot’s family.

Umar’s account says that Shahaz-ud-Din parachuted out of his aircraft safely, but was then attacked by a mob after the F-16 crash-landed — possibly in the Laam valley, stretching out westward from Naushehra into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Shahaz-ud-Din, Umar has claimed, was hospitalised, but succumbed to his injuries.

The PAF Wing Commander flew for the 19 Squadron, also known as the ‘Sher-Dils’, who served with distinction in the war of 1965 and 1971. Pakistani military spokesperson Major-General Asif Ghafoor had asserted, on the morning of 28 February, that two Indian jets had been shot down and two Indian pilots injured — one of whom was in army custody, and the other in the hospital.

Later in the evening, Major-General Ghafoor stated that only one Indian pilot was in Pakistan Army custody, without explaining his earlier comments. “It’s extremely improbable the Pakistan Army just made up the second plane and pilot,” an Indian military source says. "The more likely explanation is that troops were unable to identify the destroyed aircraft or the battered, broken body to be their own. There was probably miscommunication up the chain of command.”

In the 1999 Kargil War, Pakistan had denied its troops were involved — leading to protests in Pakistan’s northern areas, from where the Northern Light Infantry is drawn.

Eleven years after the Kargil War, Pakistan’s army officially acknowledged its role, naming 453 soldiers and officers killed in the 1999 conflict. Captain Karnal Sher and Havildar Lalak Jan, who were both killed on 7 July, 1999, were awarded Pakistan’s highest honour, the Nishan-e-Haider, but were not acknowledged as Kargil war casualties until November 2010.

Maulana Rockullah's Expert comment: So Pakis first said 2 Indian jets were downed and 2 pilots were killed. The FACT seems to be one jet was F-16 downed by rusting Mig-21and the Pak locals lynched down to death their own Pak Air Force Wing Commander who is a son of Air marshal.
Our pilot Wg Cmdr Abhinandan came back as a HERO shooting a advanced plane by a "rusting bucket" !!! :india:

What a disgrace, a military of a country that refuses to acknowledge their own dead soldiers. Dear porkchops, you guys are dying for this shithole of a nation ? Doesn't matter to us though, as long as its porkchops dying we'll keep having our orgasms.

At least respectfully acknowledge the fallen, who has died for your own nation. Pathetic.:daru:

Completed diary of events on 27 Feb
Pakistani's attempt to attack Battalion HQ
Shukriya janab for posting this.

Here is what I have seen in blue color. So 24 Paki jets Vs 8 Indian jets ie. 3:1 overwhelming PAF force still ineffective  and Mig21 downing F-16 and rest chased away.It was a mission FAILURE by PAF. Now remember the air force starting the attack usually have upper hand since defenders have less time to react.

Goosebump Alert!! Must Read

8 Indian Jets attacked and Chased away 24 Pakistani Jets!!

What Happened Yesterday Morning on the LC?

Yesterday morning at around 9.45 a large Pakistani attack formation was detected when they were approaching the Line of Control.

The formation comprised of 24 Jets, mind you, "24 jets" which included Eight F-16's, Four Mirage-3, Four Chinese made JF-17 Thunder and other escort fighters to protect the attack formation.

A small number of these then proceeded to cross the LC onto Indian side but were intercepted by our jets that included Four Sukhoi 30MKI's, Two Mirage 2000's and Two Mig 21 Bison's.

Pakistani jets fired a few laser-guided bombs on our military establishments across LC, which of course they missed hitting. (Wreckage of AMRAM missile is found today which used only by F-16's)

Indian Jets immediately started chasing them and went on a hot pursuit. In the ensuing chase, Wing Co. Abhinandan, who was manning a Mig 21 Bison (which is almost 50 years old) locked on to a Pakistani F-16 (Which is 10 to 12 years old) and fired an R 73 air-to-air missile on it and shot it down. Mind you! This is like a Maruti Omni taking over a BMW. Pakistani F-16 fell in their territory and 2 chutes were seen to be opened.

The chase exposed Mig-21 Bison that Abhinandan was flying and a Pakistani F-16 attacked him with an AMRAM which struck his aircraft.

Wing Co. Abhinandan ejected and landed on the Pakistani side of the LC.

With reports confirming this incident, this is the most bravest Air combat anywhere in the world in recent years.

8 of our Fighters Chasing away 24 Pakistani Jets.

Have faith in our Military my dear friends. They are capable of locking horns and defeating the enemy. Stand with them rock solid.

Jai Hind !

One think for sure

Pakistani's should sack that ISPR filth large mouth Gafoor :rofl::bounce::hehe:

Lol he exposed his own airforce
These Paki Gen's should be beaten by chittar's in public for SPREADING LIES and fooling jahil Paki kaum.

They are trying to change goal posts for hiding the truth.

The LATEST is ISI sponsored Paki forums tried to spread rumors(1000's a day) that F-16 manufacturer(Lockheed) is to file law suit against Indian claim of shooting F-16 and Lockheed denied it flatly! Tight slap on face of Pakis.

That Danyal is a senior Paki officer and was forced to apologize. :pound:

Imagine the impact on the PAF morale!!!!
In a week, they get caught sleeping on the job in an escalated state of alert and the go on to lose a crown jewel of fighter inventory to a South Indian (who they consider substandard) riding a cold war era jet!!!!
Icing on the cake- paki army does not acknowledge that the brave pilot is dead!! Quietly handover the body to grieving family without proper protocol. I believe no namaz e janaza no nothing.
Hopeless paki fuckers. Atleast treat your army men right. They sacrifice much more than what we civilians could ever earn.!!!

Still a lot of claims but no clear proof. This is all nationalistic jingoism that's clouding rational analysis...

Anyway, this analysis from Bellingcat is more compelling - https://www.bellingcat.com/news/rest-of-world/2019/03/02/falcon-vs-bison-verifying-a-mig-21-wreck/
There are many tale-tale signs such as.

1. DG-ISPR and Imran Khan said they have 2 pilots. MoE comes with media brief that only 1 Indian pilot is missing in action and Mig21 shot down an F-16. Then the same DGISPR says Pakis have only 1 Indian Pilot. So who was that second pilot? Gafoor has also said no F-16 was used, but India showed to public, the remains of Aim-120. Then Pakis said the serial number of AIM-120 belongs to Taiwan. Taiwan rebuffed. So why lie about F-16 if there was nothing to hide?

2. Drop tanks of F-16 were seen with the wreckage of Mig-21. Remains of the engine were also seen which were certainly not of Mig21.

Now some hard evidences.

1. RCS recordings of F-16 by NETRA AEW, SU-30 MKI, Mirage 2000 and other ground-based radars.
2. Gun-Cam recording of Wing Co Abhinandan's Wing-Man
3. Pics of wreckage taken by Imaging Satellites and other spy satellites. Do mind that all most all of the Indian spaces based surveillance assets are covering J&K and interesting spots in pakistan

Now the question is if we have all the evidence then why not release it to the public?

So let me ask a counter question. What is the need?

Indians trust in our armed forces. Our MoE said we lost 1 pilot. Pakistanis said 2 pilots and in 4 hrs started saying just 1 pilot. Do i need to speak further about the professionalism of Indian side and lack of Professionalism of Pakistanis? In all the JINGOISM as an officer, as high a DG-ISPR Gafoor did not bother to cross check his facts about the number of Pilots before calling a media briefing. Top it off with PM Pakitan doing the same. I mean seriously?

Add to it is one glaring fact that Pakistanis are such a bunch of fools who are still taught in their textbooks that Pakistan won 1971 war. And Pakistanis across length and breath actually believe that have won 1971 despite the existence of Bangladesh.

I mean for Pakistan which has LIES as proteins of its DNA, why should GoI waste even a second on divulging details of 27 Feb when Mig-21 shot down PAF F-16?

The objective of IAF strike on Pakistani terrorist camps was to give a message to terrorists and their patrons that India will strike at will and with impunity whenever comes the need. And all the attention shall remain on this issue only.

To start with the objective was never to tell the world that Wing CO Abhinandan can shoot down F-16 with Mig-21. It was just a small tactical triumph and so shall it remain.

If GoI gets into proof giving mode. Then after every future conflict and war, half of the time, Armed Forces would be giving proofs and explanations. That's not how professional militaries work. Unlike Jihadis in uniforms who changes figure within hours.

To conclude, I fully support GoI for fixing the attention of the world at the real issue i.e terrorism and Pakistan as the nursery of it by not letting vested interests and mindless jingoism shift the focus to smaller almost insignificant issues like proof of F-16 getting shot down by Mig-21.

Worse his name and service records won't even exist anywhere anymore. Nonexistent as a ghost. Too bad.

May he joins Indian Armed Forces in next life as a quartermaster for better respect.
