IAF jet lands successfully on Yamuna expressway

The Indian Air Force has carried out a successful trial of landing a combat jet on a road runway.

The IAF's Mirage 2000 successfully landed on Yamuna Expressway near Mathura on Thursday.

It's a kind of first for military aviation in India.

Road runways are used for emergency landing and become important if airbases are crippled during war times.

At present, countries such as Germany, Poland, Sweden, South Korea, Taiwan, Finland, Switzerland, Poland, Singapore, Czechoslovakia and Pakistan have dedicated stretches on their expressways and highways for airplanes to land and take off in case of an emergency.

On condition of anonymity, a senior IAF officer said, "During the 1971 war, couple of Pakistani jets did manage to reach Agra to execute bombardments, which never happened. The stretch on Agra-Lucknow expressway will provide additional strategic points to air power, in case any emergency situation happens during conflict or at peace time."

Great news.

Our friend @jouni would be in much delight.

I hope he doesn't cast his slight.

This is considering the Finnish AF has already conducted such a flight.

So this is it! Wide concrete roads can be used as emergency runway. More such trials required specially in Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat North Bengal, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Identification of such stretches with Re-fuelling facility will add more punch to IAF. Good Show!

Congratulations...We are lucky that our F/A-18s are with twin-engines. They are powerful enough to take off from quite short and narrow roads. Also arresting cables are used to stop the planes in a very short distance. This way we can use also normal roads which are not known to possible enemy. Planes will be refueled and rearmed and off you go... to take down you know who.

hehe. What did u think, we put sand on our roads so cars don't slip? Luckily we don't need such desperate measures in India.... Monsoons usually spoil our roads..................

Nice roads, I never thought that this class of roads are in India. You could land Airbus A380 in there ;)

We used to have problems with speeding in our roads. Not anymore after police asked help from the military. Police radio the speed and after some warning shots they usually slow down.

So anyone overspeeding is fired upon by a 120mm gun and "Destroyed in seconds"?

And was the Police sent to Russian border as a replacement since Military was doing work of Police?

It happens onleeee in Finland.

Finland is so rich it does not believe in speeding tickets. It rather destroys its unused ammo!!
