Hussey: Gurunath ran the team
- Srinivasan's enthusiast-only contention torn to shreds
Calcutta/New Delhi: Michael Hussey has been a most valued member of the Chennai Super Kings and, under normal circumstances, everybody would have rushed to get a copy of his book Underneath The Southern Cross.
However, after what he had to say about Gurunath Meiyappan, nobody in the Chennai Super Kings is going to take a second look at the book.
Obviously, Hussey didn't intend it that way, but he has torn to shreds Narayanswamy Srinivasan's contention that Meiyappan, his son-in-law, was just a 'cricket enthusiast'.
In Underneath The Southern Cross, Hussey has said that Srinivasan had handed the control of the team to Meiyappan who was, in fact, actually running the IPL team.
"Our owner was India Cements, headed by Mr Srinivasan," Hussey wrote in his book. "As he was also the president of the BCCI, he gave control of the team to his son-in-law Mr Gurunath. He ran the team along with Kepler Wessels, who was coach."
Former team principal of Chennai Super Kings, Meiyappan, was chargesheeted, along with 21 others, for gambling, cheating and criminal conspiracy. He was also accused of revealing confidential information about the team and using the same for betting.
Meiyappan was arrested by Mumbai Police in May and named in a betting chargesheet last month. The Supreme Court of India is hearing a matter related to Meiyappan.
Prior to his arrest, the senior CSK official was involved in the functioning of the Chennai team.
He could be spotted in the team dugout and at auction tables. Gurunath also represented himself as the team principal on a verified Twitter account.
After the scandal broke out, a two-member probe panel was constituted by the BCCI and it eventually cleared the Super Kings of any wrongdoing, but the Cricket Association of Bihar moved court and procured a stay order.
The Supreme Court on Monday refrained from vacating its September 27 judgement, in which it had restrained Srinivasan from assuming charge even if he got re-elected.
That meant that even though Srinivasan was brought back to the position by the BCCI during Sunday's AGM, his problems are far from over.
BCCI's counsels A Sundram and C S Vishwanath appealed to the court that Srinivasan has offered to stay away from all matters related to the IPL and restrict himself to only other matters of the BCCI. The case was adjourned and will be heard on October 7.
In May this year, Srinivasan had said that his son-in-law was simply a "young [cricket] enthusiast" who associated with the team, while an India Cements press release had said: ""¦that Meiyappan was not team principal as he claimed on his Twitter account, but merely an honorary member of CSK team management."
However, Meiyappan had been an active participant at team auctions since 2009 and given interviews to the press as team principal. Rajiv Shukla, the then IPL chairman, had even sent an email meant for the annual team owners workshop to Meiyappan.
