Hitachi IT unit to shift focus from China to India, other emerging economies

Hyderabad: Hitachi Solutions Ltd, the information and telecommunication systems arm of Japan's Hitachi Ltd, said it would expand its operations in other markets in Asia-Pacific at the cost of China, as political tensions take a toll on the relationship of Asia's two biggest economies.

Relations between Japan and China soured over territorial claims on a chain of islands in the East China Sea called Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese. Taiwan, which also claims the islands as part of its territory, calls them Diaoyutai Islands.
Tensions escalated in the region when China last month imposed an air defence identification zone over an area that includes the disputed islands. Japan has asked its commercial airlines not to comply with China's demands of submitting flight plans to fly in the newly-established zone.

"China has been very difficult in terms of political thing and economic side of it," Masakazu Kuji, executive officer of Hitachi Solutions, said in Hyderabad. "We do have some issues between Japan and China."

"China has another development centre which we found interesting 10-15 years ago," he said. But the market is changing now and operating a development centre is difficult from an economic point of view, Kuji explained.

Kuji, however, clarified that his firm will continue to work with existing customers and Japanese entities, including other Hitachi entities, doing business in China. The company's existing development centre in China caters primarily to the Japanese market.
Instead of China, Hitachi Solutions will expand to other emerging economies in Asia-Pacific such as India, Vietnam, the Philippines and Myanmar.

"India has been a partner of development (for Hitachi) than China in the past," Kuji said. "We think it is much easier to have sustainable growth here in India."

India's "high standards" on the IT delivery side, thanks to its English-speaking workforce, compared to other economies in Asia including even Japan, makes it a natural destination to operate from, he explained.

Hitachi Solutions America Ltd, a subsidiary of Hitachi Solutions, opened a new development centre in Hyderabad on Thursday to work closely with Microsoft Corp.'s research and development facility in the city.

Hitachi Solutions America, which builds solutions on Microsoft Dynamics AX and Microsoft Dynamics CRM software, entered the Indian market in July this year and employs 200 people at its three centres in Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune.

"India is going to be a strategic destination," said Ananth Subramanian, chief executive officer of Hitachi Solutions India Pvt. Ltd.
The Indian unit will cater primarily to customers in North America and Europe in oil and gas, construction, retail and manufacturing segments. The technology services provider plans to take its India headcount to 550 by 2015.

When PM Abe comes to India as Chief guest for Republic Day. india should push for more Japanese companies manufacturing now in China to look at India as an alternative. Set up a single window clearance for Japanese investors. Absorb all the technology we can from them whole development close strategic and military ties.

As Yusuf says, I hope the fools in GoI establish a single window override mechanism for Japanese companies, at least for a few months. A country which keeps expressing in investing in India needs to be encouraged. No hope from the Congoons of course - they will be busy doling out sops to try to retain the Gandu family's hold on power. I hope the next government does this on a priority basis.

The Japanese Emperor was accompanied by a very big delegation.

I have come to know that there were delegates from the nuclear industry including members from KEK. There have been many meeting on the sidelines away from media glare and we can expect some big ticket deal with the Japanese.

Also GOI is trying to get PM Abe as the Chief Guest of the Republic Day Parade.

Many Japanese companies are looking to invest, big-time, if required even take over Indian I.T. companies.

Not a one liner, but shows how ardent they are at acquiring Indian business.

I hope the government use this as an opportunity to encourage more investments from countries such as Japan. There are already many engineers in India who are in desperate need of jobs.

Get technology from Japan?
Good luck!
In only 2 scenarios, Japanese will provide their tech to you:
1. the tech in question is absolutely outdated to them; or
2. there is other vendors of the same tech in the market.

Hitachi is a Japanese company. Given the bellicose attitude PRC is showing towards Japan, and given the strong nationalism the Japanese usually have, economics apart, they have every reason to shift to India. India doesn't even have to make conditions better than PRC. As long as India gives about the same conditions as PRC, the Japanese will move to India.

It is the same thing with every country. The only exception was the USSR who gave advanced technology to India virtually for free, simply in expectation of goodwill and international friendship.

Yes, every country has its own restriction on technology transfer, but Japan is the worst. You can't blame them since tech is all the leverage they got.

No, USSR didn't give anything to India for free. They are seeking a strategic partner and everyone treats India as their partner in WW3.

And they gave advanced weapons to india instead of technology. That is why India is still heavily relying on import weapons after 50 years of "TOT".

The USSR have not given us all the technologies that they had invented. They have given us, by far, more than any other country. Here is an example:
The plant also produces and markets various chemical by-products from its coke ovens and coal chemical plant. It was set up with the help of the USSR in 1955.[1]

The ten-time winner of the Prime Minister's Trophy for best integrated steel plant in the country, Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), has been India's sole producer of rails and heavy steel plates and major producer of structural steel. The plant is the sole supplier of the country's longest rail tracks, which measure 260 metres (850 ft). The plant also produces products such as wire rods and merchant products.

That is the exactly idea of all these "TOT": giving you some tech while keeping the key part for their own, which make you rely on their supplies even more.

Russia is not the only one playing this, everyone does.

Obviously, you don't know what I am talking about!
That is the strategic map during cold war: India was seen as USSR's ally while China was on USA side.
