Independence day celebrations :- a red mark on the calendar , indians are happy to get a day off from work to relax and enjoy but the big question is the independence day a mere day to relax and chill with friends like any other weekend. Do some of the nationalist ideas within us take a front seat and we BECOME INDIAN just for a day to show our love for the country. What does independence day signify for todays youth , when will government go beyond mere speeches and old movies on TV . :- can we say this to todays youth.
And on every 15th August, we discuss so http://defenceforumindia.com/milita...ndependence-day-turned-into-mere-holiday.html
i lost that thread there nrj lol thanks merge this with that would be great its like the old gandhi movie which comes every year on dd1
for once let's rephrase the question do the old people view 15th aug as a mere holiday.. After all its the young who are in the army and fight to defend the country etc
Apart from the ceremonial services in all countries that were colonized and attained dependence, yes it is a holiday for people to enjoy. Enjoy the freedom they have to move around, chill out as they say without any fear. What more can common folk do? That they preserve their freedom by going out to vote to chose their government is good enough.
The Gen Y , though more materialistic than previous generations are as patriotic as any previous generation Physically speaking it is a holiday for all Indians whether young or old ;because working people get a holiday; but the patriotic feeling and fervour is all around . And why not since Indians are confident and optimistic about India's future
Like living things don't have to reminded to draw breath,a free man does not have to reminded he is free,to be born in India and breath its air to become free.On August 15th we dont remind ourselves that we are free, but what it is, to be not free.
lets get over with the morality of it. people slog their ass off working for the whole year, are they not working to better the country and make a better use of the independence we have got, is that not good enough and what is so special we are looking at, that we want people to do on the 15th? its just another day! if you are no good for your country the other 364days, there is no use in showing how patriotic you are just for one day, and if you have done it well the rest of the year, thats more than enough. a holiday, sure it is, if people want to enjoy that one day, let them, and no not all of them rest and sleep away, quite a few fly kites as well.
AUG 15th is not just another ordinary Holiday for people to indulge in Holidaying in hill stations, have a bash in pubs. Its a day to remember, the sacrifices made by our Heroes to get independence. its a day to remember our thousands of soldiers guarding our borders, staying miles and miles away from their own families. Its a day to instill a sense of pride to young children attending flag hoisting ceremonies in their respective schools. Respect freedom, respect independence and wave our national flag with Joy!!!!
Because this independence was not fought and gained in a war like US war of Independence. So what fervour can you raise in GenY who don't even have a legendary war to show and impress them with? True that many heroes like Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru, Veer Savarkar, Tilak, Chandrashekhar Azad, Lajpat Rai, Netaji and INA etc fought valiantly, but their efforts didn't give the final blow and make British leave. It was more or less a "handing over" ceremony by the Brits to their former servants. Had this been something like US war of independence, even the genY would have been impressed.
