Navratri begins with special planetary position
The nine-day 'Navratri' festival of Goddess Durga commenced across the country. The Shardiya Navratri this year has a special significance because of its planetary alignment that earlier occurred 34 years back in 1978.
This year's Navratri is special as the festival commences on a Tuesday (October 16) and will also end on a Tuesday (October 23), while in 1978 it began on October 3 and ended on October 10. The next time it will happen after 27 years in the year 2039.
It is believed that praying to Lord Hanuman alongwith the Goddess would be important as the day begins as well as concluded on Tuesday.
In North India, the festival of Goddess Durga began after 'Kalash Sthapana', while in the western part of the country, especially in Gujarat, the occasion is celebrated with Dandiya. In the eastern part of India, especially West Bengal is adorned like a new bride to celebrate the festival.
South Indians also display pictures of Goddess and toys at their homes during the celebration.
In Nashik city, the nine-day festival began with a grand puja at the famous hill temple of Goddess Saptshrungi. Nashik division of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) arranged special buses up to Nanduri to carry the pilgrims from all over Maharashtra.
Meanwhile in Bollywood, celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Madhur Bhandarkar have wished love and good luck to family, friends and fans on the occasion of Navratri.
