ECM and EO pod will be standard fit for all LUH anyway.

This is the billion dollar question, seems like this is a bone being thrown to the Russians for god knows what reason.
I think Modi uses these bones to keep the big dogs happy!! In international diplomacy, goodwill/favors are bought and sold!! The 36 Rafale deal with France also seemed like a way to get France's attention on India's concerns on terror etc.
(One might argue if Modi hadn't France would have seen India's way anyways after the Paris attack - but no one's a clairvoyant !!!)

HAL should try to develop a sensor suite to achieve maximum from this platform.
MMW radar like kiowa

By the last upgrade Kiowa just less the 50 kg from it maximum take off weight when with fuel tank full. It effect the structure of the helicopter very bad and now that most shoulder launch anti aircraft missile are dual seeker, that means a more powerful jammer. Plus there was a problem of power and cooling of electronic. Such helicopter donot have enough space or power to support the electronics needed to special operation. Plus now days UAV does a better job. HAL should make a unmanned type . That will be more effective.

If Russia wants defense deals, it needs to sell knowledge and education to India too. India needs jobs and intelligence, on top of hardware.

Is this helicopter expected to be used in combat, or for simply coastguard and transport/rescue topics?
Right now no combat chopper is planned.

Impressive work by hal, hal is improving in helicopter department i am sure after this LCA experience they will do well in fighter plane department.
Also some credit goes to current BJP Government, it wouldn't have been possible in the regime of scamgress and there bar bala head.
This chopper just took its first flight and has done 200 KMPH by now. It is doing well.

I do not think so. It should carry about 1300 Kg. It is a 3 ton class chopper i believe. So it should carry atleast 1200 to 1300 KG as per my guess.

Info available from LUH specs:

  • Empty weight: 1,910[7] kg (4,211 lb)
  • Max takeoff weight: 3,150[7] kg (6,945 lb)
  • Fuel consumption: 0.69 kg/km (2.4 lb/mi)
  • Range: 350 km (217 mi; 189 nmi)
Calculate derivative values:

Fuel capacity = 350x0.69 = 241.5 kgs
Loaded weight (empty +fuel) = 1,910 + 241.5 = 2151.5 kgs

Max weight on board = 3150 - 2151.5 = 998.5 kgs

Assuming each pilot (with helmets and other accouterments) weighs around 100 kgs.
2x pilots weight = 200 kgs

Max available payload = 998.5 - 200 = 798.5 kgs.

Now assuming that SOP is never to touch the Max load and you leave around 100 kgs margin:

Then Safe Payload = 700 kgs

That is fine but Empty weight is going to reduce few hundred KG and count the pilot weight 70 KG and not 100. MTOW is counted after all concessions so no need to further reduce 100 kg for margin.

MTOW will mostly be determined at sea level (highest thrust available) flying to some 'reasonable' height. Most operations happen at least at about 3000 ft.

Even if you discount the above the payload is just about 800 kgs (but it is actually lower than that: between 600-700 kgs depending on the operating altitude )
