Rig Evacuation | KATC.com | Acadiana-Lafayette, Louisiana
After an evacuation of a rig in the Gulf of Mexico, workers were still trying to secure a well as of 5:30 p.m.

The rig is called Rowan Louisiana and it's located in Vermilion block 356, which is about a hundred miles southwest of Lafayette. The company that operates the rig is called EnVen Energy Ventures. The company evacuated 41 employees, while the remaining 36 are working to stop the well from flowing.

EnVen Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Garrett said the evacuation is due to a loss of well control. As workers were drilling, fluid began to flow to the surface of the well. Garrett said workers immediately began to divert the natural gas overboard, and continue to work to shut-in the well.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, which is investigating, says the fluid flowing from the well is natural gas.
