Even now, showing weather on a map can be a boring business. TV weatherman have quite literally got such displays down to a science, with multiple colors and zoomable three-dimensional maps.
This map is far more interesting, as far as I'm concerned. Behold Wind Map, a simply named project created by two Google computer scientists. Thanks to Mashable for spreading the news on this.
The map shows -- in a way I've never seen -- wind movement around the US and is updated hourly based on data from the National Weather Service.
You can easily see wind speeds, weather front boundaries and where the wind is swirling and stagnating. As you might guess, it's sweeping across Wyoming.
One of my favorite aspects of the map: You can mouse over a spot to get wind data and location, and click to zoom in for finer-grained detail of the wind flow.
Zoom into Casper and watch the wind veer to the north around Casper Mountain.
Really, really stunning.
