GoI issues notice to Google for showing PoK in Pakistan

Government on Saturday said it has issued a notice to Internet search giant Google for depicting Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir as part of Pakistan."Any wrongful depiction of Indian map and its boundaries is liable for action under the India Information Technology Act. Google has been asked to immediately correct this inaccuracy," Minister of State for Telecom and IT Sachin Pilot said.

Google Insights for Search, a tool which shows search volume patterns across specific regions, had shown a map of India as part of Pakistan.

Google Insights for Search is a service by Google which provides a visual representation of regional interest on a country's map.

When contacted, Google said the product group has been asked to correct it immediately.

Pilot also said the IT Department has been asked to survey all such companies showing inaccurate maps.

He said the government will wait for Google to respond and then take "appropiate action at an appropriate time".

Does it make and change in the situation on the ground????If GOI would have been serious about POK it would 've put serious efforts reclaiming it instead of wasting time on bashing poor google.Speaking of the misplaced priorities ----GoI is the perfect example of it.

How much money those back-door error-makers might have got from whomsoever? This is pathetic. Even sometime back Wiki had blunder. :angry_10:

I am thinking about launching a website of maps & showing Alaska into Canada & SK into NK. Lets see how their blood boils at that time!

GOI can only issue notices to such companies. Or maybe they should throw a memo at UN asking all global organizations to be error-free while showing Geopolitical areas & if they fail to do so, compensation with a open public apology should be demanded against defaming of that specific country.

These things are totally unacceptable. I mean what if a school child logs into such popular (so called educating tool) website to see his hometown being part of some other country? He might learn that only. All these companies must be made to sign agreement by Govt while starting their maps & shyt service that error in such critical issue is unacceptable while a lawsuit will be waiting for them very next moment of realization!

Google rectifies mistake, shows entire J&K as part of India

NEW DELHI: The search engine Google has amended its maps to show the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir as part of India.

The correction came in response to the notice issued by minister of state for communications and IT Sachin Pilot to Google Inc for showing Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as part of the neighbouring country.

After Pilot noticed the lapse, the ministry wrote to the website that maps available through www.google.com/insights showed certain parts of J&K as part of a different country. The notice said that wrongful depiction of Indian map could attract action under Sections 69A and 79 of the IT Act.

Sources said the website had corrected the maps in its memory though a few pages would take some time to upload.

It sets right what is a sensitive issue in the country. The showing of PoK as part of Pakistan had attracted strong comments from various sections.

In other countries, google maps shows the whole J&K as disputed with dotted lines neither in India nor Pakistan. I think the maps change in a country specific manner.

It can be acceptable at a point as disputes are reality. But showing entire region as part of another country is bloody stupid. I wish they could show the street view of POK with Indian outposts & nearest McD!

FYI, the amended map is shown to users of India only. For the rest of the world, J&K is only the area of Kashmir that GoI administers.

It's interesting how in its notice to Google, GoI pursued it citing "misrepresentation of PoK as part of Pakistan" and not "misrepresentation of PoK as part of Pakistan and misrepresentation of Aksai Chin as part of China". What are they so afraid of?
