Germany to Phase Out Nuclear Power by 2022

It has been facetiously dubbed "the phaseout of the phaseout of the phaseout." But after weeks of heated discussion, the German government has made it clear that it is serious with its U-turn on nuclear energy.


Following talks that went into the early hours of Monday morning, Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen announced the details of the government's new approach to phasing out nuclear power. The new plan foresees all of Germany's nuclear plants going offline by 2021 -- with one possible exception: If the transition to renewable energy does not go as quickly as planned, three of the plants will be allowed to continue operating until 2022, as a kind of safety buffer against electricity shortfalls.

Empty promises... they cannot replace 28% of their power generation with renewable energy by 2022. The government that comes to power that has to deal with shortages will shortly reverse the decision.

If there is any country in the world which has the engineering know how, technology and money to make the transition to clean energy it has to be Germany. However haveing everything does not mean they will do it, it may end in usual western hypocrisy. Countries like USA ask the world to go green but USA is the largest polluter by far. The carbon foot print of an average fat bastard in the US is 20 barrels of oil a month compare this with one barrel of oil per person in China and 0.6 barrels of oil that an average Indian uses. Where is 20 barrels and half a barrel, yet they drag us to the Kyoto meetings to stunt our growth while they will remain the largest polluters(Per person) for years to come.

They where not afraid of the world getting destroyed by pollution or have any guilt of responsibility when they where the polluting, now where did all this responsibility and crocodile tears come for earth all of a sudden? Was when they see their dirty business being done by other countries and they are afraid of that. Now they are drilling oil in Arctic and Alaska what an tragedy of hypocrisy.

Good point to make to whom it may concern is. Nuke power is very important to generate electricity. Countries like India,who is emerging with billions to feed, needs nukes energy badly provided its safe. You can't generate more with renewable source. depends on which country needs what. Germany can lend electricity from France and other EU countries so doest matter to him.
