The Indian Air Force is all set to assemble its entire operational fleet of aircraft – over 1,100 of them in a series of war games titled Gagan Shakti in the next few days.

The two phase country wide exercise will involve more than 15,000 IAF personnel deploy to locations other than their bases. According to the Indian Express over 3,000 to 4,000 sorties would be flown per day during this exercise.

The first phase of the exercise will be held along the western border, while the second phase would be along the northern border. To make up for the severe depletion in fighter aircraft number the IAF is set to attempt what the Indian Express report terms as "surge operations".

During these operations personnel are expected to ensure much higher availability of aircraft fleet than during normal periods. Service personnel from support organisations such as the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will be deployed along with the squadrons to ensure extremely high serviceability rates. This, according to the report, will be the first time the IAF is practising surge operations at this level and scope.

The IAF is also reportedly fielding the locally developed Tejas aircraft during the exercise, despite the first squadron not being fully raised due to delays in supplies from HAL.

That's plain stupidity................
It will increase the wear n tear and the spares consumption will increase.
At the end crores of tax payer will be consumed

This is just not about money.
IAF aircraft availability is very less, by this type of exercises they are putting even more pressure.
Why don't they just use the monye for the up gradation of airforce infrastructure

Probably because you cant place all your bets on paper plans. Op Parakram showed that Cold Start was difficult with a bad logistics setup.
With so much digitization and new technologies seeped in
e.g. We have switched onto Elta EL/M-2084, Rohini , LLTR radars at almost all airbases.
On SAM front we have new Akash,MRSAM, Spyder SAMs,
IACCC
Lot of new upgraded Mirages,Mig-29, Jags and Tejas it makes sense to see how plans can be put into actual practice. Plus Sukhois at almost all major air bases.
Probably the IAF is actually testing nationwide network centric warfare. Will also weed out any shortcomings in battle plans. Also HAL can know how much spares/maintenance will be required for high tempo operations hence the presence of HAL engineers as well as railways.

Its not just about money, its about intense pilot training. testing the limits of the aircraft and its maintenance crews. When you are outnumbered 3:1 in a two front war, The only way to counter the numerical disadvantage is to increase the number of sorties to compensate. This is out of pure necessity.

That's my concern too..
What if a crash or high wear and tear
Then I am afraid, they have to deal with it! It's an occupational hazard considering we chest thump our professionalism in our every video and besides we cannot forecast hazards during the exercises.

The least could happen is we would be able to know our operational capabilities and how ready we are. If there's a war next day, how they'd be able to maintain high availability, good command and communication within ranks, the synergy between each element of IAF and the thirst to gain air superiority as fast as possible.

Besides I am more interested in the overall big picture, i.e.
  • Mobilising all elements of IAF at western theatre is orchestrated very thoughtfully, IAF knows that PAF will be watching the vectors and flight paths of each squadron etc. So the air exercise will employ a slew of unconventional tactics.
  • IAF then can test these tactics and come up with completely different ones.

Actually it would've been more interesting if IAF conducted there air exercise at both fronts, the western and eastern front's to test how we can react to any response from a two pronged war. Such scenario and long range network centric warfare tactics could've been tested.

New Delhi: Group Captain Arun Marwaha leaked sensitive information on national security to Pakistan's ISI, Delhi Police said in its chargesheet against him.

The Police said that in total 12 sensitive documents, including the upcoming 'Ek Gagan Shakti' Air Force exercise and IAF-Army joint Human Aid in Disaster relief exercise, were passed on. The exercises now remain stalled.

The chargesheet said that Marwaha, who was in the post of Joint Director Operations (PARA) at Indian Air Force Headquarters, and the ISI agents would talk on a 'hookup' app. The platform provided them secured chats which get deleted every time the users log out.

The officer was first approached by the agents on Facebook from two IDs named Kiran Randhawa and Mahima Patel. They then started chatting with him on WhatsApp, followed by the app.

The chats between the agents and Marwaha were explicit in nature. It was done to honey trap him, the group captain confessed in his disclosure statement.

On approaching Facebook, the IP addresses of the IDs were ascertained to have been operated from Pakistan. Marwaha was arrested on February 7 this year by Delhi Police. He had been chatting with the ISI agents from December last year, police said.

The Group Captain was first detained by the Army for inspection and after proof of espionage was found, he was handed over to Delhi police who booked and arrested him under the Official Secrets Act. Laptops, Mobiles and CDs were recovered from him.
