Take a look at the promise of 3D-printing technology, which will enable personalized manufacturing of items, not unlike how home desktop printers enabled the desktop publishing revolution:

For an infrastructure-challenged country like India, I think that such devices could enable transformation as powerful as that caused by personal computers and cellphones. There would not be a need to over-produce items, as these could be produced on demand, thus lowering pollution and waste. Personal innovation could lead to a flood of new product ideas, which could be expressed into tangible models. Instead of centralized mass-production and over-production of items and their transport to different markets, the transportation burden would be reduced, as items could be produced locally on the spot.
