Sarkozy mulls quicker Afghan exit after local soldier kills French troops | Asia | Deutsche Welle | 20.01.2012
Four French troops serving with the US-led International Security Assistance Force were killed by a man dressed as an Afghan soldier in an attack in the Taghab valley of the eastern Kapisa province on Friday. At least 16 other Western soldiers were injured in the attack.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy responded to the attacks by suspending all training and joint operations in the country.

"The French army is alongside its allies, but we cannot accept that a single one of our soldiers be wounded or killed by our allies. It's unacceptable," said Sarkozy, who was apparently considering an early withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The attack was the latest in a series of episodes in which Afghan soldiers or police officers, or insurgents wearing official uniforms, have opened fire on soldiers of the American-led coalition in Afghanistan.

The killings are designed to sap Western morale and hasten the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan sooner than an agreed NATO deadline of the end of 2014, when Afghan forces are supposed to be ready to defend the country on their own. A rising number of the attacks have also been born of simmering animosity between coalition forces and the Afghan soldiers they fight alongside and train.
