French police: Swiss diplomat arrested - New York News | NYC Breaking News
French authorities say a Swiss diplomat drove his car at police as they attempted to stop him at a sobriety check in central Paris and an officer opened fire in self-defense.
Police say Stefan Flueckinger, Switzerland's ambassador to the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, was arrested after fleeing the check. No one was hurt.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed the police stop and said it is in contact with French authorities and is prepared to lift the diplomat's immunity if requested.
A police union spokesman says Flueckiger was tracked down via his car's license plate and failed a sobriety test after he was taken in for questioning. He spoke only on condition his name not be used, citing office policy.
Flueckiger's office said he was unavailable for interviews.
