RAIPUR: Five CRPF jawans were killed and two others seriously injured in a landmine blast in Dantewada district, 400 kilometres from Raipur, late Tuesday evening.

The blast took place on National Highway 221, six kilometers away from Sukma town. The jawans belonged to CRPF's 2nd battalion. They were travelling in a convoy of three vehicles, said CRPF IG Pankaj Singh.

"They were heading back to their company headquarters at Sukma from Konta, when the second vehicle was hit by a blast, six kilometers short of Sukma," he said. "It was a private looking Tavera," he added.

The blast took place between 8.15-8.30 pm, he added.

Two jawans who are seriously injured were being rushed to a hospital for treatment, said police.

NH 221 runs on the edge of Dantewada district, through areas in the grip of conflict between Maoist rebels and security forces.

Peace to the fallen CRPF jawans and their aggrieved families.

I wonder, if the Maoists were to attack an Army base, say the Brigade headquarters in Raipur, would that make them elements engaged in a formal war against the state, as opposed to a 'civil struggle'? And, would that then entail Army involvement,

You know, in 2010, 285 security personnel died in Maoist attacks, more than 10 times the number in Assam and Kashmir put together. How much longer is this going to continue? Only until the Centre gets its act together and forces the states to co-operate in security operations, or else....
