BBC News - Bin Laden death: 'CIA doctor' accused of treasonBin Laden death: 'CIA doctor' accused of treason[U/]

Dr Shakil Afridi is accused of running a CIA-sponsored fake vaccine programme in Abbottabad, where Bin Laden was killed, to try to get DNA samples.

He was arrested shortly after the 2 May US raid that killed the al-Qaeda chief.

The commission has been interviewing intelligence officials and on Wednesday spoke to Bin Laden family members.

Pakistan, which was deeply embarrassed by the raid, has described the covert US special forces operation as a violation of its sovereignty.

A government commission, headed by a former Supreme Court judge, has been charged with discovering how the US military was able to carry out the raid deep within Pakistan without being detected.

It is also investigating how Bin Laden was able to hide in Abbottabad, a garrison town, for several years.
DNA sought

After questioning Dr Afridi, the commission said that in view of the record and evidence it was "of the view that prima facie, a case of conspiracy against the State of Pakistan and high treason" should be launched against him.

Washington has been arguing that Dr Afridi should be freed and allowed to live in the US.

In the weeks after the Bin Laden raid, reports emerged that Dr Afridi, a senior Pakistani doctor, had been recruited by the CIA to organise the phoney vaccine drive.

After having tracked down a Bin Laden courier to a high-walled compound in Abbottabad, the CIA wanted to confirm Bin Laden's presence by obtaining a DNA sample from the residents.

It is not clear if any DNA from Bin Laden or any family members was ever obtained.
This is the height of stupidity from Pakistan or is it that they are now admitting that the capture of OBL a strategic loss to them.

The Pakistanis especially Pakistani Army has lost face not only in from of its own people but also the world due to US's OBL raid and so it is punishing everyone who has collaborated with US/CIA in spying on OBL.

Technically speaking Pakistan is within its rights for trying the doctor for treason for collaborating with foreign intelligence agency.

I reallly hope they do that. Further proof of their complicity with terrorists. Anyways the mindset is well known and no further proof is anyways required. The Americans will sleep on this as well. Oh Bummer!!

It appears that Good doctor did his work in identifying OBL, Pakistan who was sleeping in the same bed with USA and OBL while extracting military and economic aid from USA, played double game. USA after raiding OBL compound and killing him was a huge humiliation and disgrace for Pakistani army, Pakistani airforce, ISI and Pakistani Navy.

This act of Pakistani Commission in recommendation of doctor for Treason is prima facie evidence of the fact that state of Pakistan has knowingly and willingly provided safe house to OBL. Soon Pakistan is going to pay for this.

Intentions don't matter, this guy (Doctor) worked for CIA, against the national interest of his own country. Traitors should not be glorified, even if they are born amongst our enemies, they must be used and then they must be killed ruthlessly.

Then the whole government and military apparatus of Paki land should be "killed ruthlessly" for working with America (and the CIA, and Pentagon) in the last 60 yrs... :pound:

Amit, for this then it means that OBL was a asset and also his arrest has affected the security and well being of Pakistan. While officially the same Govt. And it's agencies were actively working (on paper) with the Americans to capture OBL. Talk about convoluted thinking on part of the Pakistanis.

I think the "treason" part here is that he helped US violate his country's sovereignty.

Yeah people like OBL,hafiz saeed are considered as national heros and assets while the person who helped nab OBL is considered as traitor. If the world community had any doubts about Pakistan thinking and its intentions this act would settle once for all where Pakistan stands in relation to terrorism.

This shows that pakistan supports and hide terrorists and those very people that help nab them are thrown in jail with serious charges. BTW Mushi took lot of money to send its own countrymen to US prisons, they even took money or shut up their eyes and brains for drone attacks, is this not treason ?

Pakistan is upset that the good doctor did not turn the information on OBL to the Pakistani authorities. Pakistan supports terrorism so a 30 year prison sentence for the doctor was no surprise.
