Using an ultra-high-intensity laser beam and a two-mile-long particle accelerator—it could be possible to create something out of nothing, according to University of Michigan researchers who developed new equations that show how a high-energy electron beam combined with an intense laser pulse could rip apart a vacuum into its fundamental matter and antimatter components, and set off a cascade of events that generates additional pairs of particles and antiparticles.

so that will contradict everything/.....like energy is neither created nor destroyed it is converted from one form to another..

yes universe was created from nothing, here nothing means no matter, anti-matter sub-atomi particles, or even a single string, smallest part in matter didnt exist before big bang. at the time of big bang a single unimaginably hot, unimaginably small part was created this movement is called as singularity. after this movement universe start expanding , first the expansion of universe was so fast , it cannot be measured in normal time(this is only time in our history of universe , expanstion of universe was faster than the many times speed of light ) .

First things first. This opening sentence: "Up until just a few hundred years ago most people thought that the Universe was a stable, static place that had been here forever and would continue forever" is only true when refering to the word "most". Those individuals who sat under the teachings of a man from northern India, name of Sidharta Gautama, commonly knows as the Buddha, knew the universe was flux and continuously changing.

In his recollection of the process which brought about his enlightenment, Buddha was recorded in writing as saying he recollected many (manifold) expansions and collapses of the universe.

This statement alone means most people were aware of the universe as having a beginning and ending, many times over. And they were aware of the universe as non-static.
