Following a tip-off by a merchant about two men trying to buy groceries with counterfeit 1,000-rupee notes on Thyagaraya Road on Saturday afternoon, a police team headed by M. Saravanan, Inspector of Police, Mambalam apprehended them.
They were Mohammed Zahir Hussain (25) and Mohammed Raju Sheik (19), both natives of Jharkhand. “We first seized 16 fake 1,000 rupee-notes from them. “The gang is known to have come to Chennai on two occasions earlier and made a total of Rs.50,000 then in exchange for counterfeit notes here. They had sent the money to an agent in Jharkhand through online transactions. Investigation is under way and we are expecting to unearth more links,” said Mr. Sakthivel.
