They are going to have to retool another production site to replace it which will costs hundreds of millions and take several months. The delays will incur penalties and raise programme costs.

Japanese F-35 Lightning II Stealth Aircraft Reported Missing Over The Pacific Ocean

The aircraft has disappeared at around 19.27LT. The status of the aircraft and its pilot is unknown.
According to several Japanese media outlets, an F-35A Lightning II belonging to the Japan Air Self Defense Force is currently reported as missing during a mission over the Pacific Ocean.

The F-35 launched from Misawa Air Base, in Aomori Prefecture, in the norther part of the country. Misawa is the home of the 302 Hikotai (Squadron), the unit previously operating the F-4EJ “Kai”, that has officially moved to Misawa air base to operate the JASDF F-35A 5th generation aircraft after retiring its last Phatom on Mar. 26, 2019.

According to the JASDF, the aircraft had taken off from about 7 minutes, as part of a 4-ship formation, when it disappered on Apr. 9, at 7:27PM LT on the Pacific Ocean about 135 km east of Misawa.

Japan Maritime Self Defense Force search and rescue vessels have been dispatched to the area where the aircraft disappeared.

If confirmed, the Japanese loss would be the second involving the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters. The first one occurred on September 28, 2018 when a U.S. Marine F-35B Lightning II crashed near Beaufort, South Carolina. The pilot ejected safely. As a consequence of that mishap, almost all the F-35s were shortly grounded on Thursday, October 12, 2018 for safety inspections of their fuel flow systems.

Japan’s program of record is 147 aircraft says the official Lockheed Martin website. “In December 2018, the Japan Ministry of Defense announced its decision to increase its procurement of F-35s from 42 to 147. They stated the aircraft will be a mix of 105 F-35As and 42 F-35B STOVL (Short Take Off and Vertical Landing) aircraft.”

13 F-35A are currently based at Misawa AB, based on Japanese media reports.

A Japanese military fighter jet that disappeared during a flight exercise has crashed and the pilot remains missing, the nation's Defence Minister has confirmed.

The F-35A stealth jet disappeared on Tuesday (local time) while conducting anti-fighter battle training with three other F-35As off the eastern coast of Aomori.

Debris was found in the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday near where the aircraft disappeared from radar about 30 minutes after taking off from the Misawa air base in northern Japan.

The pilot, a man in his 40s, is still missing.

Defence Minister Takeshi Iwaya said the cause of the plane's disappearance was not immediately known, and 12 other F-35s at the Misawa base would be grounded.

The crash is only the second time an F-35 has gone down since the plane began flying almost two decades ago.

It is the first crash of an A version of the fifth-generation fighter designed to penetrate enemy defences by evading radar detection.

A US military F-35B crashed near the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in South Carolina in September, prompting a temporary grounding of the aircraft.

Japan invests in F-35 fleet
Japan has just started deploying the expensive US-made F-35s since last year as part of its plan to counter potential threats from North Korea and China.

The Government announced in December it planned to increase its procurement of F-35s from 42 to 147, including 105 F-35As.

Each plane, which is manufactured by American defence company Lockheed Martin, comes with a price tag of about 10 billion yen ($126 million) each.

Lockheed Martin said in a statement it was standing by to support the Japanese Air Self Defence Force as needed.

The Pentagon said it was monitoring the situation.

Australia waiting on plane order
Last year Australia's first two F-35A fighter jets arrived in the country.

A total of 72 of the aircraft have been ordered and will continue to be delivered to Australia over the coming years.

Then-defence minister Christopher Pyne said each plane cost $124 million and represented good value for money.

"This is the largest acquisition of the Air Force's history, $17 billion, and arguably the most lethal acquisition in the Air Force's history, certainly of its time," Mr Pyne said.
