Two explosions hit capital of Russia's southern republic of Dagestan

Twin blasts hit Makhachkala, the capital of the southern Russian republic of Dagestan, according to local police. 7 people were injured, among them two police officers.

The seven injured have been taken to hospital, but none are thought to be in a life threatening condition.

The first explosion occurred when a grenade launcher was fired at the second floor of a restaurant, said a spokesman for the Dagestani police as cited by Itar-Tass.

The second blast came from a parked car near the restaurant. Police said that the explosive device that detonated near the restaurant was not packed with shrapnel.

"An investigative team is currently operating at the scene establishing the circumstances of the incident. Among the possible causes may be a criminal rivalry," a security source told RIA Novosti.

The southern Russian republic, together with neighboring Chechnya and Ingushetia, has suffered from the continuous threat of terrorism against the civilian population.

Shootouts between Russian law enforcement officers and militant groups are common in the region. Among the latest incidents, three officers were killed in Dagestan on Wednesday. The special rapid response unit officers were ambushed as they were checking information about the location of a group of militants, a district police official told Itar-Tass.

Ramzon Kadyrov (Chechen President) seems to be the one saying that Umarov is dead. Supposedly Ramzan has made such announcements before.
Anyway there isn't any confirmation yet from Russian government, I think. If you have, please post the link.

Security sweep in Russia turns deadly - Europe - Al Jazeera English

"Three members of the Russian security forces and four armed fighters are reported to have died in a shootout during a sweep for armed groups who have threatened to attack the Winter Olympics that begin in Sochi next month.

Wednesday's deadly shootout occurred in a house in the village of Karlanyurt in the Dagestan region of the North Caucasus, according to Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC)

The attack happened on the same day that Russia's Duma, or lower house of parliament, introduced legislation aimed at broadening the powers of security services and boosting their oversight of the Internet, Russian news agencies said.

The NAC said the dead men included a man accused of carrying out a car-bomb attack in the city of Pyatigorsk late last year which killed three people.

Television showed images of grey plumes of smoke rising from the house in Karlanyurt, near the regional capital Makhachkala, which is about 620km east of Sochi.

Five officers were also wounded in what a spokesman called a special operation."

Spetsnaz would be on top of this when done for sure.

Russian Security Forces Kill 7 in North Caucasus Firefight

Seven militants have been killed during an operation in the capital of Russia's troubled North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, security officials said Saturday.
The six men and one woman were killed by security forces following a siege in the Dagestani capital of Makhachkala, Russia's Anti-Terrorism Committee said in a statement.
The killings follow a Friday grenade launcher attack on a restaurant in Makhachkala that was followed by a car bombing when police arrived to secure the area. Investigators said Saturday that 16 people, including several police officers, were injured in the incident.
Violence is an almost daily occurrence in the North Caucasus, which is just a few hundred miles from the resort town of Sochi where Russia will next month host the Winter Olympics.
A counter terrorist operation was also underway Saturday in a district of Kabardino-Balkaria, another republic in the North Caucasus, according to regional officials. The reason for the operation was not immediately clear.
The seven people killed by security forces Saturday in Dagestan included a local militant leader and the widow of a dead militant preparing for a suicide attack, the Anti-Terrorism Committee said.
Other Russian media reports quoted security officials as suggesting that the dead people had been linked to the attack on the Makhachkala restaurant the evening before.
Russian security officials often announce the prompt killing of those allegedly responsible for attacks in the North Caucasus, but such reports are almost impossible to verify independently.
Persistent violence in the restive North Caucasus is fuelled by endemic poverty and corruption, as well as ethnic divisions and an ongoing Islamist insurgency.
Islamist fighters, once confined largely to Chechnya, have spread across the North Caucasus in recent years, and are frequently linked to the attacks on security forces, police and civilians that are reported in the nearby republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
