It's not a secret that our armed forces are going through a rough patch. Be it the morale of our Navy after series of severe mishaps it has seen in past few years, to the short supply of ammunition in our Army, to out-dating fleets in the air force. The delay of procurement, the shady deals and the middlemen influencing top bureaucrats in the process.
The problems are many but there can be no compromise whatsoever with our national security.
PM Modi has met the head of the army, the air force and the Navy and has asked them to prepare a list of weapons they want.He further announced that he would hold a meeting with service chiefs every month to discuss the state of affairs and the concerns relating the defence forces.

Hope this boosts the morale of our jawans and restores their faith in the decision making capability of the government.
1 month on, PM Modi strikes at corruption with his 'Trident' already - News Oneindia

I think people should buy actual Gold instead of going for Gold bonds. This will help India in case of depression.

Need to see the capital budget. Has implications for Rafale. Last year the partial budget did not cover Rafale as it was not to be signed in FY 14-15. How much is the upfront payment size for the MMRCA deal?

Can anyone tell me whats the Paramilitary budget? Its probably around 11 Billion$ . That makes the total Defence budget 40+11 = 51 Bil$. Can anyone confirm that?
Im sure Paramilitary budget isnt shown as a part of the defence budget. Paramilitary comes under the home ministry.
But we know Para units like BSF, ITBP , NSG,etc play an active role during Wartime along with the armed forces.

The upfront cost of Rafale is 15 %of the total cost ... which is about $2 billion. (maybe a little more a little less)

I have already said earlier that the focus is on Army now.

The increase in capex is in army equipment and naval ship-building.

There is no allocation for Rafale. The upfront payment will be as much as 3 billion if a contract is signed. That converts to almost the entire capex budget of IAF for the year. So it is clear that Rafale is not yet factored in the budget calculations. I expected this.

@Rowdy, there is no clarity on Rafale as far as negotiations go.

A section of press keeps on sounding very optimistic but the reality is far from it.

Well out of the $40bn .. we need to see how much parrikar allots for capex and opex ...
opex should increase by about 4000cr due to 1 rank 1 pension(mentioned by parrikar in the HT terror boat interview as a rough calculation) ... so capex as a percentage is going to go down.....
but lets see ... hope is the common man's lifeline.
