Erdogan says Israel 'surpasses Hitler in barbarism'

Sunday, 20 July 2014

ANKARA: Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan accused Israel on Saturday of having "surpassed Hitler in barbarism" through its attacks on Gaza, but warned Turks against taking out their anger on the country's Jewish community.

Erdogan continued to ratchet up his rhetoric against the Jewish State over its offensive, threatening to further harm to already badly frayed relations between the two countries, once regional allies.

Hours earlier Israel advised its citizens against travelling to Turkey, citing "the public mood" after attacks on Israeli diplomatic missions during protests in Istanbul and Ankara against the Gaza offensive on Friday.

Palestinian officials say more than 330 people have been killed by Israeli strikes launched in response to rockets fired into Israeli territory by militants loyal to the Islamist group Hamas.

"Israelis have no conscience, no honour, no pride. Those who condemn Hitler day and night have surpassed Hitler in barbarism," Erdogan told supporters at a political rally in the Black Sea city of Ordu.

He accused the United States of defending Israel's "disproportionate" tactics, and bemoaned the failure of the Muslim world to take a stronger stance.
But Erdogan did warn his supporters against taking their anger out on the country's Jewish population.
"I don't approve of any (bad) attitude towards our Jewish citizens in Turkey, despite all this. Why? They are the citizens of this country," he said. Around 17,000 Jews live in Turkey.

Protesters have taken to the streets of the NATO member's two biggest cities for the last two nights, and were due to return later on Saturday.
Local media reported an explosion of pro-Hitler tweets and some liberal Turks reacted with outrage on Twitter when a pro-government newspaper printed a Hitler-themed crossword.

On Friday US representative Eliot Engel urged Erdogan to act after the same newspaper published an open letter calling on Turkish Jews to apologise for civilian casualties in Gaza.

"The disgusting letter published by the Turkish newspaper Yeni Akit has no place in any society and only serves to put innocent lives in danger," Engel, the leading Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, said in a statement.

Israel's Foreign Ministry said early on Saturday Israelis should "avoid non-essential visits" to Turkey or be especially vigilant and steer clear of anti-Israel demonstrations.

On Friday the ministry said it would pare back already reduced staff at its embassy in Ankara and consulate in Istanbul.

Erdogan is hoping to become Turkey's first directly elected president in polls due in August, and anti-Israeli sentiment flows strongly through the largely conservative Sunni Muslim voter base he will rely on to give him victory.

The two countries have seen their relations degrade sharply in recent years, reaching crisis point when Israeli commandos stormed the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara sailing as part of a flotilla challenging the Jewish state's naval blockade of Gaza.

Ten people were killed. Efforts to repair the damage had intensified in recent months after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologised for the raid, but hopes of a rapprochement appear to be fading, after Erdogan said on Friday that relations between the two countries would not improve while he remained in post.

Erdogan is hardly the correct chap to comment.

He should not forget the Turkish genocide done to Armenians.

The genocide was carried out during and after World War I and implemented in two phases: the wholesale killing of the able-bodied male population through massacre and subjection of army conscripts to forced labor, followed by the deportation of women, children, the elderly and infirm on death marches leading to the Syrian desert. Driven forward by military escorts, the deportees were deprived of food and water and subjected to periodic robbery, rape, and massacre.[10][11][12] The total number of people killed as a result has been estimated at between 1 and 1.5 million.

Turkey is taking a stance as a major regional player.
Nothing wrong with it.

Hardly a regional player.

ever since the demise of the Ottoman Empire, they are but a side player in an otherwise Arab majority area.

Having been rejected by the Europeans and blocked for everything in their pursuit to be wannabe Europeans, they are trying to cosy up with the Arabs.

I wonder if the Arabs will forget the humiliation they were subjected too during the Ottoman period.

As your obsession with India will continue.

Both are quite natural, given the post Independence history.

Hopefully the language remains above board.

New awakening maybe, I think Turkey is about to change course and get more involved with muslim friends. EU will never accept Turkey as a member, I said it ten years ago and I will say it again. Eventough Turkey is a secular nation of very moderate muslims, there is no place in EU for a muslim country. It will never happen.

Turkish PM Erdogan says 'Israel is a country that threatens peace in the world' as protesters sought to break into Israeli ambassador's Ankara residence

Israel on Friday ordered some of its diplomatic staff in Turkey to leave the country for security reasons, after protesters angered by its assault on Gaza sought to storm Israeli embassy buildings.

Turkish protesters overnight tried to break into the ambassador's residence in Ankara as well as the consulate in Istanbul, with the diplomatic controversy over the Gaza assault risking a new crisis in relations between Turkey and the Jewish state.

"Foreign Minister (Avigdor) Lieberman issued a statement "¦ following the demonstrations and instructed the Israeli consulate and embassy to reduce their diplomatic staff in Turkey," an Israeli embassy spokesman said, without stating the numbers concerned.

The spokesman emphasised that the Israeli representation in Turkey would not be completely shut down but would be reduced to minimum staffing. The measure also includes the diplomats' families, he added.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry also accused Turkey's security officials of failing to prevent the violence, he noted. Hundreds of protesters attacked the Israeli consulate in Istanbul while similar numbers sought to break into the Ankara residence of the ambassador after the launch of the ground assault in Gaza.

Riot police fired tear gas and water cannon to halt the protests in Istanbul in the early hours of the morning but in Ankara they stood on the sidelines.

The crowds in Istanbul, waving Palestinian flags, hurled stones and smashed the windows of the consulate in the upscale Levent district to denounce the Israeli military operations that have left at least 260 Palestinians dead.

They shouted slogans like "Murderer Israel, Get Out of Palestine!" and "Strike Hamas, Strike!" while one protester wrote on the consulate wall: "Die, Murderer Jew".

Some of the protesters breached the police barricade and climbed the walls to break into the consulate, prompting police to fire tear gas and water cannon.

In Ankara, around 200 people protested in front of the Israeli ambassador's residence under the watch of riot police.

'Israel threatens peace'

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, has vehemently criticised Israeli actions in Gaza, accusing the Jewish state of carrying out a "genocide" of Palestinians.

"Israel is a state which knows very well how to kill children," Erdogan said Friday, repeating his famous comments before walking out in 2009 of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

"Israel is a country that threatens peace in the world "¦ Israel has never taken the side of peace," he said. Erdogan also ruled out any improvement in troubled ties with the Jewish state as long as he remained in power.

"As long as I am in power, I never think anything positive with Israel," he said.

Kuddos to Erdogan.
Right... the ISIS shooting surrendered soldiers and civilians are the examples worth following.

ISIS killed more in a day of fighting that the entire duration of the Israel/Palestine conflict.... pity you muslims & pseudo-seculars for your persistent myopia.

Two wrongs don't make a right. ISIS/L has no political clout or support of any muslim nation, they are terrorising the region just.like Israel.

Voice of reason... hmmmm. But you yourself... how many times on this forum did you post condemning ISIS with the same frequency as you do Israel.

My social media pages are brimming with fellow muslims or neo humanitarians condemning Israel, a bunch that was tight lipped during the ISIS atrocities. This double standard is the encouraging factor for jihadi groups and when these clowns act up, ballsy nations like Israel react.

Where the hell is _secularism_ here? A minority Jewish state is protecting itself from Arab atrocities, what's wrong in that?

If Erdogan is so worried and has sympathy towards Arabs, why not send in his army to protect Arabs rather than whining?
