CHENNAI: An engineer was arrested for trying to smuggle out photographs of the fast breeder reactor at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research at Kalpakkam near Chennai on Wednesday. Central Industrial Security Force guards who arrested
M SHAFFIR ALI, 28, seized four pen drives containing more than 400 photographs of the sensitive installation.

Ali, hired by a contractor involved in the construction of the reactor, had worked in the structural engineering section of the plant for the past four years. The guards arrested him when they found him moving shiftily in a restricted area on Wednesday.

The CISF guards found Ali, who attempted to escape when they stopped him, was carrying four pen drives, a cellphone and a card reader. The CISF informed the Kalpakkam police about Ali's detention and handed him over to them.

Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, which is developing the country's first fast breeder reactor, is not under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Kancheepuram SP C Vijayakumar said Ali had taken photographs of the reactor under construction and of restricted areas of the atomic centre. He couldn't explain why he had taken the photographs, the SP said.

Officers of the Intelligence Bureau, Research and Analysis Wing, state internal security and state intelligence questioned Ali.

Ali, who has a diploma in mechanical engineering, was assigned to an unit involved in the installation of the reactor at Bhavani in Kalpakkam. He had taken photographs from his place of work and from several other locations. "Ali sneaked into secluded places, took photographs and saved them on pen drives," Vijayakumar told TOI.

Investigators have sent Ali's cellphone to the cyber crime laboratory to retrieve details of his contacts and information possibly deleted from the handset. They also gathered call details from his mobile service provider. An investigating officer said Ali had worked for a private company in Kuwait before being recruited by the contractor to work on the fast breeder reactor at Kalpakkam.

"Ali lives with his family in Manikuppam village near Chengalpet on the outskirts of Chennai. His father, Maqbul, is a farm hand," Vijayakumar said.

Police registered a case against Ali for criminal breach of trust, punishment for mischief and hacking into computers and stealing data of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Ali is also likely to be charged under the Atomic Energy Act. A magistrate's court remanded him in judicial custody.

This is strange because I have visited plants at Narora, Kota and Kalpakkam regularly and they make sure that your mobiles, laptops and other devices were never allowed inside.

CISF needs to find out who was the photographer. This fellow may just be the courier for the pen drives.

Saya, one thing I have learned in Delhi if you are driving a sedan and a female is sitting next to you- whatever be the time of the day and whatever be the threat level you will never be stopped at a check point. If you add a kid to this mix then 100% you will be waived thru.
