Emerging careers in the aerospace industry : India, News - India Today
Mridu Rai February 4, 2014 | UPDATED 18:50 IST

Pritam Bhavnani, president, Honeywell Aerospace talks about emerging career opportunities within the Indian aerospace industry. Honeywell's Aero Club initiative provides training to students who are looking to pursue a career in aerospace about the fundamentals of flying and aerospace modelling.

Which are the career opportunities in the Indian aerospace industry?

Students could look at training to join a cabin crew or become an aircraft maintenance engineer.

For those not that keen on flying, there is always a need for ground staff, ticketing agents, airport management, security or customer service.

In the defense aviation sector, outside of pilot opportunities, students can look into fields such as structural engineering, electrical technology, field service engineering, air combat officer training, technical support engineering, supply chain management, technical instruction and project engineering.

There is also ample opportunity as an aviation corps officer, aircraft life support fitter, air warfare officer, avionics technician, machinist, parachute jump instructor and safety and service technician.

Apart from these, there are careers on the safety side that candidates could consider. For instance one could explore a profession as an air traffic controller, who is responsible for the overall safety and efficient flow of air traffic.

Further, there are opportunities with the regulatory authorities, who oversee the drafting and implementation of guidelines that aid in the enhancement of safety technologies and procedures as well as capacity expansion.

With India launching its Mars probe late last year, as well as with India planning to launch three satellites belonging to the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) constellation this year, a range of career opportunities for students looking at pursuing a career in the space sector have opened up with India's space research program ISRO.

Which are the best institutes in India providing courses in this field?

Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai, Kharagpur and Madras
AJ Aviation Academy, Bangalore,
Rajiv Gandhi Aviation Academy, Hyderabad,
Wings College of Aviation Technology, Pune
Ahmedabad Aviation and Aeronautics, Ahmedabad

What are the skills required to excel in this field?

The skills needed vary depending on the career path. For instance, pilots should have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Advanced math and physics classes are advantageous because flight theory includes a great deal of physics and math skills. Some careers also require three years of progressive work experience (commercial pilot, navigator or air dispatcher experience), or a combination of college and work experience, in order for a student to become a pilot.

Aside from that, interpersonal and communication skills are paramount in order to exchange information and avoid any confusion. Aviation managers should be able to multitask and have a breadth of technical knowledge.
