No one is going to be unhappy about the turn of events even though its a democratically elected govt. Egyptian army has full US backing. Its good to see them standing up against the Islamists.

I wish the US has similar sense in Syria and not backed the Islamist rebels.

That is too much of asking from Gazi Army.

He was Pakistani hero and Pakistani media was gloating in his praise when he was elected. I wonder what Zaid Hamid has to say about this.

Similarly our great President has expressed concern over the military rule while he never spoke once about the Muslim Brotherhood.

Syria says political Islam being defeated in Egypt

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, fighting to crush a two-year-old uprising against four decades of rule by him and his late father, said on Wednesday the upheaval in Egypt was a defeat for political Islam.

"Whoever brings religion to use in politics or in favor of one group at the expense of another will fall anywhere in the world," Assad was quoted as telling the official Thawra newspaper, according to an official Facebook page.

"The summary of what is happening in Egypt is the fall of what is called political Islam."

Relishing the possible downfall of one of Assad's most vocal critics, Syrian television carried live coverage of the huge street demonstrations in Egypt demanding the departure of President Mohamed Mursi.

Assad's late father, Hafez al-Assad, used the military to crush an armed insurgency against his rule led by the Muslim Brotherhood, killing many thousands in the conservative city of Hama, which became a centre of pro-democracy demonstrations when the uprising against the younger Assad erupted in March 2011. Thousands of leftists were also jailed and tortured.

The Syrian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood became one of the most powerful factions behind the mostly Sunni Muslim uprising against Assad, who belongs to the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, and is being helped by Lebanon's Shi'ite Hezbollah militia.

Mursi has expressed support for foreign intervention against Assad and attended a rally two weeks ago calling for holy war in Syria.

A month ago, Syrian authorities responded to a wave of protests against Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, another fierce opponent of Assad, by calling on him to halt what it said was violent repression and step aside.

Initially i thought that morsi would be given some sort of face saving exit, but i was wrong. Indeed military pushed him out. Did MB really threaten the vested interests both within army and in region?? Maybe seeing how freedom & justice party was going about in turkey made the egyptian army nervous. Even gcc didn't want a rival (MB) in power. who knows what happened behind the scenes. We may need to wait for wikileaks some time later.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mubarak-era judge takes over as Egypt's interim president
Mansour said he would respect the rule of law and "look after the interests of the people," according to a live translation by BBC News. He said he had received an "order" to become interim president from "the great people of Egypt.":confused: Mansour said Egypt should stop producing "tyrants" and worship only God, not "any president."

He studied law at Cairo University, graduating in 1967. He also studied in Paris and was a legal adviser to the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Trade from 1983 to 1990.
So does this mean west/gcc vetted this mansour before he was given a go ahead???

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Thursday said there had been a coup.
No rocket science invovled here, as turkey itself went through a huge round of protests just recently. So if one nato nation is saying it as coup, then will rest follow the same?? The problem is as per US laws, they cannot support an govt coming via a coup or something like that. If and a big IF, the yanks stop aid to egypt military, then it creates more trouble in region. IMO the people who will be lobbying the hardest for continuing of aid to egypt army will be, guess who?? it's israelis.

It will be interesting to see what happens today, as MB has a given a call of 'Friday of rejection'. There are reports that top leadership of MB is under arrest. Once after friday prayers are held, it needs to be seen how many answer the call.

Many predicted that MB will not take it lying down after waitng for decades together to get into power. Untill now nothing has happened. Will they up the ante or not is to be seen. Peace with egypt is crucial for israelis, they will be working hard with west and gcc (via west) to ensure that egypt doesn't have a "descent into chaos".

2 days back, western media was not overtly anti-MB. Whether bbc, cnn they were saying morsi was democratically elected etc etc. Now it seems gloves are out.

BBC - Analysts optimistic for post-Morsi economy

Traders are hoping that Egypt's prospects will improve in the absence of Mr Morsi, even though the country's battered economy remains in crisis.

Some analysts said a long-stalled loan from the IMF may now be possible,
The bolded part tells a very imp story.
Qatar and Saudi Arabia loaned at least $3bn each, Turkey put in another $1bn and Libya stumped up $2bn. And while the IMF loan of $4.8bn failed to materialise, the United States kept up its annual grant of more than $1.3bn.

Analysts say that under Mr Morsi, Egypt's economy went from bad to much worse and is now close to collapse. Electricity and water supplies are sporadic and in some places, even basic foods such as bread are hard to come by.

However, such a picture shouldn't detract from the fact that Egypt economy was in dire straits before the revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak.

^^^Don't be so cryptic. Not sure what exactly was the post about.
@SajeevJino @Blackwater The current interim president was previously in paris and later worked in saudi as some adviser before returning to egypt. As currently egypt is surviving to a large extent on doles provided by gcc/west. So maybe yes, west/saudi approved of his candidature. But how/when were his frictions with israel. Also what will america take away from egypt. Please elaborate
