DRDO to start Rs 100 crore research centre at Jadavpur University

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) is collaborating with Jadavpur University to start a new Rs 100 crore research centre at Jadavpur varsity to develop technologies related to cyber security and robotics for the defence forces.

Housed in the campus of the state-run university, foundation stone of the Jagadish Chandra Bose Centre for Advanced Technology was laid on Thursday.

Officials said the focus of the centre will on pursuing collaborative advanced research, starting with secure systems and cognitive technologies, directed energy, unmanned and robotics technologies and then venturing towards other futuristic technologies.

Expected to be ready in the next two years, the centre will act as a self-accounting unit of the DRDO.

DRDO head S Christopher said they have been working with Jadavpur University for a long time and also with other institutes in Kolkata and having a centre here will help their personnel to communicate easily and get the design faster.

Top Defence Research Body's Biggest Ever Alliance With Jadavpur University

KOLKATA: In what is said to be a Defence Research and Development Organisation'sbiggest ever academic collaboration, the foundation stone was laid for the setting up Jagadish Chandra Bose Centre for Advanced Technology at Jadavpur University campus this morning.

A sum of Rs. 100 crore has been allocated for setting up the research centre and more funds will be released later.


The institute hopes to support research and development as India prepares to increase export of defence technology.

DRDO Director General Dr S Christopher said, "In China, 20 per cent of defence spending is on research and development whereas in India it is 5 per cent. This centre will bring together R&D engineers who will work on research which is application oriented."

"This is an attempt to create a research and technology hub in the eastern region. Faculties from institutes of repute in the region will participate," Jadavpur University Registrar PK Ghosh said.

"This collaboration will provide a platform to all institutes from the region to contribute and JU will play a lead role and provide leadership," Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Suranjan Das said.

There has been a design bureau ste up by Indian Army to make a connect between armed forces and PSUs to get weapons according to need.
Plus since last two years, DRDO has completes 248 projects in 2 years. (first time not delayed. Go through PSU thread).
I hope this lab further boosts the program.
Reduce the pressure on DRDO, give high end projects to DRDO and low end to private companies and watch the magic.
