Indigenous artillery guns a reality soon

India’s multi-pronged plan to self-produce artillery guns is finally inching ahead to end the two-decade delay. At least two types of guns are in final stages of being handed over to the Army.

“Dhanush” is being made at Ordnance Factory Board, while Advance Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) has been designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and will be manufactured by Tata and Bharat Forge.

In its report in Parliament on August 7, the Comptroller and Auditor and General (CAG) said: “Pending successful clearance in user trials and consequent finalisation of system configuration, bulk production clearance (BPC) for the indent of gun placed on OFB in March 2013 was yet to be accorded by the Army and as a result, deficiency in holding of modern artillery gun continues”.

Six of the OFB produced Dhanush are now undergoing “battery fire test”—all guns firing collectively—sources said adding that the plan so far was to get 18 guns by March next year. A bulk production order would be placed soon. The MoD is positive on the ATAGS and very soon will place order for 12 guns for the Army to start using it before suggesting any changes. A formal proposal is expected to be okayed by the Defence Acquisition Council. Also, 145 pieces of the M777 ultra light howitzer will start arriving from September next year.

On target

  • Being made at Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), ‘Dhanush’ has a maximum effective range of 38 km, onboard computer, electronic suite to enable real-time adjustments as regards moving and static targets
  • Advance Towed Artillery Gun System has been designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and will be manufactured by Tata and Bharat Forge

Modi govt's major boost to Make in India, Army to buy 140 home-made artillery guns

In one of its biggest pushes to the Make in India initiative in the defence sector, Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will consider a proposal worth over Rs 3,000 crore to buy more than 140 indigenously-developed Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) howitzers for the army which have been developed and manufactured by a joint venture of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and private sector companies Tata Power and Bharat Forge Limited.

The defence ministry will consider this proposal of buying more than 140 ATAGS howitzers along with close to 200 vehicles, which will be used for towing the guns as well as carrying their ammunition and other spare parts during operations by the Army at a high-level meeting planned to be held this week, government sources told MyNation.

After the Bofors controversy ensured that no artillery guns were bought for more than three decades for the Army, the defence ministry, under the Modi regime has finalised supply of various guns including the acquisition of 100 Vajra self-propelled guns, M-777 howitzers from the US and Dhanush howitzers which are being provided by the Ordnance Factories Board.

The 155 mm ATAGS guns have created a world record by firing at targets at a distance of 50 kilometres, which is much higher than the other systems of this class worldwide. The gun is believed to be two tonnes lighter than the other guns of the same category and scores higher than its rivals in terms of accuracy and rate of firing.

The guns have also performed very well during high altitude trials in Sikkim and other places, the sources said.

Sources in the government said that the order for 140 guns is the initial order as the Army has a requirement of several hundreds of such guns which will replace the older systems in the force.

The future guns would be provided with more capabilities as the stakeholders will continue to develop them further.

F&ck yes, do it NOW.

ATAGS is a game changer for Indian industry

Although 1000s are needed, 140 is a decent initial order.

Modi govt doesn’t get much credit for this but they really are supporting domestic projects, they don’t make a big show about it but this isn’t like the UPA times when it seemed like all Indian projects were fighting uphill

*Someone was explaining the preparation before 1971. Months and years.

There was a time not long ago our artillery numbers was not that many and on a pedestal and near equal to areas to west.

That someone asked me - how many do you think we have now. Jai Hind.

Numbers have only risen modestly since 2014

HOWEVER, IA is on a brink of a MASSIVE increase in firepower. Modi govt has signed M777 and K9 deal along with Dhanush-45 ALL of which will be delivered within the next 6 months then there is ATAGS which hasn’t been given the usual treatment by the MOD and is instead being given attention at the highest levels. Order for ATAGS May also come soon. Last bug is the MGS although OFB seems to be working aggressively on this.

This is before we even talk about upgunning of existing platforms.

In short, in a very short span of time IA has gone from a stagnant position to one in which every one of their (arty) needs are being taken care of. CONgress screwed arty modernisation in every way, first got into Bofors scandal then used it as an excuse not to order a SINGLE piece of arty for over 3 decades.

BJP have terrible PR abilities so this is a story you’ll never hear in the media but it’s one that’s worth telling because it is being replocated in other areas also.

CONgress had 70 years and look what they achieved, give Modi 10 years and he will deliver a new country.

Procurement of 150 Indigenously Designed and Developed 155 mm Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems for the Indian Army at estimated cost of Rs 3,364.78 crores also approved.

Good stuff but when will they actually be delivered? Summer trails were meant to happen in the second half of 2018

150 is a good number for initial order, remember Kargil was won with about 120 guns, 1000 guns will make both porki and chinki sh!t themselves, whenever that number is reached Army will not remain a defensive Force it will have the firepower for conducting aggressive warfare on enemy land, Probably shell Lahore, Sailkot to rubbles in 36 hours.

Bharat Forge expects orders for up to 4,000 guns from army; looks to become global player

The Indian army requires 3,000-4,000 artillery weaponry in the next 15 years, said Baba Kalyani, CMD of Bharat Forge.

The defence ministry has approved the purchase of 150 advanced towed artillery gun systems at a cost of over Rs 3,300 crores. "This is a positive for Bharat Forge. There is the added tailwind of the new NAFTA agreement as well," he said.

"I think there will be many more opportunities that will come but this is a very good and a game-changing decision that the government has made,” he added.

Kalyani said that the company was aiming to become a global leader in artillery.

"In the next seven years, we want to be at the top of the league as far as artillery systems are concerned on a worldwide basis,” said Kalyani.

“In two to two and a half years, the order will get completed. This is a fully indigenous equipment, completely right from steel to forgings to machining to everything else, so hopefully we will do well,” said Kalyani.

Basically lobbying has started to cancel atags to import extended range US howitzers on the pretext of their being lighter. Arjun vs T90
Looks like COMCASA venom has finally hit our bloodstream. I was pretty damn sure that US will somehow find a way to sabotage us once we purchase Russian military hardware.

This is pathetic, that to ensure we diplomatically play ball we gotta have to keep them happy. ATAGS is a good weapon platform. We are serious neglect hoes when it come to indigenisation.

Not with Modi around, he will not let that to happen.

Money is the mother of all issues. I was flabbergasted reading about the " Pakodawala" not paying IT for years. My accountant in the USA made me pay additional tax on the interest earned in the Indian bank account. The USA IT is higher on the unearned income than that of India!!!
The white collar criminals not paying a fair share of their IT are no different than the terrorists. The public, Congress, RG, and others, all whine when an act of terrorism takes place. Do they ever ask this question: How much responsibility I have for this event? People like RG and his mother conveniently converted a nonprofit ORG land to their name and ownership. Reportedly 196 crore rupees is the value? They have not paid a penny of tax. He wants to be the next PM of India. Unless the mentality of the public changes, India is going to continue as a laggard. High-end technology development requires sustained commitment, ability to withstand multiple failures, paying top salaries to young and motivated people. Ideas out of the box can lead to successful products ( Nike shoes sole, the developer destroyed his wife's waffle iron more than once).

Also Bharat forge was working to reduce the weight of atags and has promised to deliver lighter version for next prototype . Hopefully they might trim a tonne or two bringing atags weight to on par of similar class gun.

Guys............. ERCA program is all about increasing the range of the shell by implementing likes of RAMJET engine. It has nothing to do with the gun.

Here read this.

AUSA 2018: US Army Extended Range Cannon Artillery programme eyes 130 km range

https://www.janes.com/article/83718...-cannon-artillery-programme-eyes-130-km-range

By comparing M777 and ATAGS, Ajai Shukla has just shown that we was kinda high while writing this.
