DRDO to develop 155 mm field gun

Indian defence scientists have embarked on developing an indigenous 155 mm field gun. The project involves an investment of Rs 300-400 crore. The Ordnance Factories and private industry would be involved in the development and production, according to V.K. Saraswat, Director-General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation .

The indigenous gun will have better firepower, higher penetration capabilities and autonomous features. It will take a couple of years to demonstrate the first prototype version. At present the development and production partners as well as automation requirements have been identified and work is in progress, he said.

In the last 25 years, India has not produced its own field gun. The last field gun, the Bofors Howitzer, bought from the Swedish firm in the mid-1980's, raised a big controversy. While the gun performed well in the Kargil conflict in the late 1990's, off the battlefield it took a heavy political toll. It also resulted in no import and indigenous effort.

Further, several global vendors were blacklisted for various reasons. There are just one or two options to buy, hence it is imperative to make our own gun argues V.K. Saraswat.

Technology Inputs :

We want to try new technology in the area of recoil. The standard recoil systems are hydro-pneumatic but we are looking at an electro rheological liquid which has adaptive viscosity characteristics. So it will have adaptive damping, you will get a smooth consistent recoil no matter what the weight of the shell and what range you are firing at. That makes for a more reliable recoil system. The PSQRs demand new technology such as barrel coating. So the plan is to first build the barrel using current technologies and then try coating. Once that barrel development technology has matured, we can add new technologies and improve its performance. A number of foreign firms are willing to offer the coating technology. We are in dialogue but nothing has been firmed up yet. In order to cut down on time, we may get the technology from abroad, especially about the barrel coating and the recoilless system.

We are in dialogue with the Army to finalise the Preliminary Staff Qualitative Requirements (PSQR) hopefully in the next couple of months. We have already started design work and will modify the design to suit the PSQR.Since these are new technologies, we expect in about four to five years time we should be ready with a prototype for user trials, followed by summer and winter trials. Production could commence in about nine to 10 years' time. So the development cycle is 5-7 years including evaluation by the Army.

Army Asks DRDO to Develop Indigenous Howitzers

Giving a boost to indigenous artillery programme, the Indian Army has pledged to the DRDO that if it proves its 155 mm 52 calibre howitzers in trials, it will place orders for a minimum 150 guns.

We have handed over a letter to the DRDO conveying that if it proves its guns in user trials in a specific time frame, we will place orders for at least 150 guns, sources said to Defencenow.com.

DRDO's Pune-based ARDE is working on developing the 155 mm 52 calibre howitzer in view of the shortage of guns faced by the Indian Army.

The DRDO had started working on developing these guns in early part of the last decade but they stopped work after the Army issued a global tender for procuring 400 guns at a cost of rs 1,500 crore, they said.

Also in addition to what Kunal has already pointed out in the post above the OFB project was based upon the old BOFORS design acquired in the 80's with very little modifications. the DRDO gun is envisaged as an entirely new Product!

Things about 155mm Guns of different calibers..

We will take bofors FH-77 based guns for study :

================
================

This is bofors 155mm/52cal gun, Specifications below :

Length of the barrel : 8.06 m (26 ft 5 in) L/52
52cal gun with ordinary ammo:19 km
52cal gun with Special ammo: 52-56,000 m (BB+RAP extended range)

================
================

This is bofors 155mm/45cal gun, Specifications below :

Length of the barrel : 6.95 meters L/45
45cal gun with ordinary ammo: 18 kms
45cal gun with Special ammo: 41,600 m (Extended range full-bore-base)

=================
=================

This is bofors 155mm/39cal gun, Specifications below :

Length of the barrel : 5.89 m (19 ft 4 in) L/39
39cal gun with ordinary ammo: 24 km
39cal gun with Special ammo: 30km

====================
====================
====================
====================

How to measure caliber :

From above :

155 x 45 = 6.95 meters long barrel
155 x 52 = 8.06 meters long barrel
155 x 39 = 6.04 meters long barrel

Kunal, the 39 calibre guns has more range with the ordinary Ammo than the 45 & 52 calibre guns. Is it because of using less heavier Ammo than the 45 cal & 52 Cal guns or is there something else.

Its an error in Wiki, FH-77 use different HE shells which have range of 24-30kms..

Cant say, but with ordinary ammo ( M107 M107 projectile - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) 39cal guns have longer range than 45 & 52cal guns..

Some Photos i took :

--------------------------
--------------------------

M107 made by OFB have range of 18-19kms, This is a universal round can be used on almost all 155mm arty guns..

--------------------------
--------------------------

This green one have range of 24km and fired from FH-77 specifically as its designed for FH-77`s chamber volume, they can withstand a bigger propellant force and acceleration compare to M107.

well im not sure about drdo claims of better firepower and all because americans are far ahead with chip infused guidable artillery shells but yes they can produce it. even now the only gun that indian army is maximally depending upon is 105 mm indian field guns. though even at that time drdo produced 185 mm gun but was rejected because army planners didnt anticipated the requirement of that gun. so its not about will they be able to make it- because they already had proved themselves long back. the question is how and when? how better this gun will be in comparison to other similar system.

another input is that with most of the gun manufacturers blacklisted i think army will go for many guns

well i can only compare with other system once i have it in front of me, i mean when its in reality and performing and we have tangible facts in front of us. till then we can only hope for the best.

sure we are here talking about the gun and not the projectile but we can co relate to justify how much time we wasted and how far teh technology has gone ahead in short how much pending work drdo has to address
