As Horowitz demonstrates, a degree in philosophy can be useful for professions beyond a career in academia. Degrees like his can help in the business world, where a philosophy background can pave the way for real change. After earning his PhD in philosophy from Stanford, where he studied computer science as an undergraduate, Horowitz went on to become a successful tech entrepreneur and Google's in-house philosopher/director of engineering. His own career makes a pretty good case for the value of a philosophy education

sir, you can't learn a subject by single day and read my post clearly you will just know whole situation of conversation by just two sentences
.
you were saying philosophy as waste of time I have you example of einstein and mahatma gandhiji
I don't know if Gandhi and Einstein were "students of philosophy".

My question was simple: tell me some of the stuff that is taught in a philosophy course. I said very clearly, just give me the subject names - even that would be sufficient for a start. And you are constantly dodging it and saying that "you can't learn in a single day".

Understand: I am not asking you to "teach me philosophy". Just tell me what they teach in college, what is the practical value if any, and what are the career options if any.

.
I don't know its subject and all that but can understand philosophy very well because of study of religious, ancient greek and roman as as well as modern philosophy
.
and practice value is its simplify the life as well as we can have some of einsteins and philosophy gives you an new approach towards problems

I think the bulk of the philosophy students turn out to be useless waste of air, when some exceptions do make a mark in the society.

However, if the thread starter is a prime example of a philosophy student, I must review my opinion from 'bulk' to 'most'.

Subjects like theology, political science, public administration ,literature etc are vulnerable without philosophy

It seems odd to me that Siddhārtha Gautama is not on that list. Is it because Buddhism is considered religion, separately from philosophy per se?

Philosophy coupled with reason and rational thought can be pretty powerful.
I am not sure if much people know but there is a very interesting subject called "Logic" in the study of Philosophy which is as a fact a branch of Maths.

A LOT of people think Philosophy is just a set of statements of people how they perceive and define things but its much more than that and it involves Maths.

These are main Branches of Philosophy :-

  • Metaphysics, which deals with the fundamental questions of reality.
  • Epistemology, which deals with our concept of knowledge, how we learn and what we can know.
  • Logic, which studies the rules of valid reasoning and argumentation
  • Ethics, or moral philosophy, which is concerned with human values and how individuals should act.
  • Aesthetics or esthetics, which deals with the notion of beauty and the philosophy of art.

There is a sub branch in Logic known as Symbolic Logic which can twist minds while doing brain twisting calculations in long tables and can be quite tough like Maths.A lot of so called intelligent guys here can fail doing these calculations.

Also this Logic used in Truth tables is also used in Digital Electronics(AND,NAND,OR,XOR etc Gates)

Philosophy does not intend to make our lives simple. It's not a self help tool but rather a rigorous academic discipline.
