'Ding Jihao was here': Chinese tourist, 15, defaces 3,500-year-old Egyptian temple and his family issue national apology

A Chinese schoolboy has been caught defacing an ancient Egyptian temple just a few days after China's government attacked 'uncivilised' tourists for ruining the country's reputation abroad.

Chinese visitors to the Luxor Temple were outraged when they spotted the graffiti reading: 'Ding Jinhao was here' on 3,500-year-old hieroglyphics on the wall of the temple.

They posted a picture of the graffiti written in Chinese online along with comments expressing their disgust at the boy's actions.

'We try to wipe out the shame with tissue, but it was difficult to clear it out, and we could not use water as the relief is a historical relic 3,500 years old.

'All of the 14 members of our tour group kept silent after seeing the sentence as we felt ashamed.'

The post prompted an online search which revealed Ding's identity, his date of birth and his school in Nanjing in east China's Jiangsu Province.

The parents of a 15-year-old Ding Jinhao have since issued a grovelling national apology to their fellow countrymen over their son's behaviour.

They told the Nanjing-based Modern Express newspaper: 'We apologize to Egyptian authorities and Chinese people who pay attention to the incident.

'He has realized he made a mistake, and we beg your pardon, please give him a chance to correct his act.'

Many social media users in China condemned Ding for damaging the ancient relic and his parents for not educating him properly.

One said: 'Ding's uncivilized behavior disgraced Chinese people.'

It comes shortly after China introduced a new law in April which warns against tourists committing uncivilized behavior but does not specify punishments.

Senior Communist Party official Wang Yang, one of the country's four vice-prime ministers, has also warned that holidaymakers should be more polite, singling out talking loudly and spitting as poor behaviour by his fellow citizens.

Writing in the official party newspaper People's Daily, Mr Wang said: 'Improving the civilised quality of the citizens and building a good image of Chinese tourists are the obligations of governments at all levels and relevant agencies and companies.'

He said Chinese authorities should 'guide tourists to conscientiously abide by public order and social ethics, respect local religious beliefs and customs, mind their speech and behaviour... and protect the environment'.

Redditors are going apeshit over this.

This little brat's parents should be fined heavily.

This kind of behavior indeed disgrace his family and his country. A lot of Chinese tourists do this in domestic touring site and now they bring it to the whole world!
Only fining his parents is not enough, he is already 15 years old and he should receive some serious punishment which he won't forget for whole life.

Whatever.

Experts should restore the statue to its original form.

ding dong

That, as a noun, has a very ominous meaning!

If what has been written is - 'Ding Jinhao was here' , then sometimes in the future with a little spin, as is the fashion, Egypt and its surroundings will be claimed as theirs!

Uneducated (not illiterate) people all over the world do this... I was appalled at the level of defacement I saw at the Ajanta caves, Ellora caves, Panchmari Pandava caves, Khajuraho, Sanchi and many such places in India...

Either people think themselves so important to leave an autograph everywhere or wants to immortalize their romance with "someone ❤ someone"

People just need to be educated and sensitized o historical monuments all over the world.

Ding Jihao is a nobody compared to Kilroy.

Engraving of Kilroy on the WWII Memorial in Washington DC
Kilroy was here is an American popular culture expression that became popular during World War II; it is typically seen in graffiti. Its origins are debated, but the phrase and the distinctive accompanying doodle — a bald-headed man (sometimes depicted as having a few hairs) with a prominent nose peeking over a wall with the fingers of each hand clutching the wall — became associated with GIs in the 1940s.

Enough of this non-sense guys.. He is a kid and kids do mischievous acts. Let it go!! Making too much of a national scene for something a kid did is stretching it too far.

Chinese Teen Defaces Egypt Temple; Sparks Outcry

The Chinese words 'Ding Jinhao visited here' are seen on bas-relief in the 3,500-year-old Luxor temple in Luxor, Egypt.

Chinese Teen Defaces Egypt Temple; Sparks Outcry

A Chinese teen-ager who defaced an ancient temple in Egypt with graffiti has come under fire at home where his vandalism prompted public fretting about how to cultivate a good image overseas as more newly affluent Chinese travel abroad.

The teen scratched "Ding Jinhao visited here" in Chinese on a temple wall in the ancient city Luxor, and the incident came to light when another Chinese tourist posted a photo of it on a popular microblog.

The photo quickly caught the attention of the Chinese public, and someone was able to identify the person responsible for the graffiti as 15-year-old Ding Jinhao from Nanjing. Many criticized Ding's act as an embarrassment to the country."Why there are so many citizens who go abroad and humiliate us? How many generations will it take to change this kind of behaviour?" Xuan Kejiong, a prominent journalist with Shanghai Television, wrote on his microblog.

The outcry prompted Ding's parents to publicly apologize. In an interview with a Nanjing newspaper, Ding's father said "the child has committed a mistake and the main responsibility falls on the adults. It was because we did not supervise him well, and have not taught him well."

Re: Chinese Teen Defaces Egypt Temple; Sparks Outcry

Teen who vandalised Egyptian relic says: "What's the big deal?"

The Chinese tourist who defaced a 3,500-year-old Luxor temple relic unapologetically posted, "What's the big deal about writing just a few words?"

He had scratched the Chinese words, 'Ding Jinhao was here' and the vandalism was uncovered by a Weibo microblog user who visited the Egyptian temple on May 6 and posted it online.

Netizens hunted down the perpetrator, 15-year-old Ding Jinhao, a middle school student in Nanjing, reported China Daily. They also hacked his school's website to shame him.

According to an AFP report, they also hacked his school's website, forcing users to click on a sign parodying Ding's graffiti on the ancient sandstone relic on the banks of the Nile River, before entering.

"We want to apologise to the Egyptian people and to people who have paid attention to this case across China," Ding's mother said in Modern Express, a China newspaper.

They also said their son had "cried all night" after learning of the cyber attacks, which prompted them to issue the apology.

However, what their son has posted online does not seem apologetic. TT.mop, Tianya and Kanka news uploaded photos of the student and screenshots of his postings.

AFP also reported that a top China official lamented earlier this month that some Chinese tourists overseas are harming the country's image.

Mr Wang Yang, one of China's four vice premiers, condemned behaviours "talking loudly in public places, jay-walking, spitting and wilfully carving characters on items in scenic zones".

The damage to the temple has since been successfully removed by curators.

It is very heartening to learn that this incident has been condemned widely in China.

When i was young, i attempted to do the same thing, thinking it was cool. It turns out that i am not alone, many Chinese had the similar experience. Sometimes i wonder where did we pick up this bad habit?
