Jill Biden Visits 'Slum Dwellers' in India | The Weekly Standard
The vice president's wife, Jill Biden, spent time with "slum dwellers" in India, according to the pool report.

"Second lady Jill Biden visits slum dwellers in Agra Agra, Jul 23 (PTI) It was a memorable day for the slum dwellers of Kachchpura near the Taj Mahal here as they had a VIP visitor -- US second lady Jill Biden who spent nearly an hour with them," reads the pool report.

Known for her interest in education and healthcare issues, Jill braved the sultry weather and walked the half-a-kilometre unpaved mud road to reach the place. She was accompanied by her daughter Ashley Biden and son-in-law Howard David Krein (rpt) Krein.

Her visit to Kachhpura was to take stock about the Health for the Urban Poor programme, funded by US-AID which is aimed at providing basic healthcare to urban poor focusing on maternal health and community participation.

She was greeted by Machla Devi, president of Adarsh Mahila Arogra Samity, its secretary Manju and other members.

Adarsh Mahila Arogra Samity is a group of local women who are working to raise awareness among the women and children about basic health related issues.

After interacting with the members she visited the pre-school cum anganwadi centre and met children there. Jill, a Ph.D. in education who has been an educator for over two decades, had her special gift for the children there -- a basket full of books ranging from colour books to story books and book on the White House.

Pack of monkeys threaten Joe Biden « The Greenroom
The security around Joe Biden's visit to India may be among the tightest in the world, but it faced an unanticipated threat during the U.S. vice president's first engagement — a pack of monkeys.

Mr. Biden started a four-day visit to India Monday with a trip to the Gandhi Smriti, a memorial to the leader of India's freedom movement at the site where he was assassinated in New Delhi in 1948.

In what could be described as bad timing, about a dozen adult monkeys–some with babies in tow– took a fancy to thick clusters of raw mangoes hanging on a tree above a tall statue of Gandhi, just before the American dignitary was due to reach the spot on his carefully choreographed walkabout of the site.

But, oblivious to the high-profile visit going on beneath them, the creatures gamboled on the branches swinging from one to another, bombarding the area around Gandhi's statue with unripe mangoes as they bit into the raw fruit and discarded the leftovers. Then three of the monkeys suddenly swept down from the branches on to a 10-foot high bamboo frame, covered with a white cloth, erected as a backdrop to the statue.

"What I don't want is a mango to drop on the vice president when he comes here," said an Indian security official as he warily eyed the furry creatures, who are regarded by many in the Indian capital as a menace.
