yes that particular statement made me laugh as well

We just took apart a Bofors for the minister," the official explained, "and laid it out."

He smirked: "He (Antony) wouldn't know the difference between a 39 calibre and a 45 calibre.

Technical specs are as follows:

Length of barrel -- 6975 mm
Weight of finish barrel -- 1890 kg
Weight of ordnance complete -- 3020 kg
Chamber capacity -- 23 litres
Max range -- 38000 meters
Muzzle velocity -- 885 m/s
Type of ammunition used -- HEER, M107, FH77B, ERFB BB, ILLG, SMK, Incremental charge bag.
Muzzle Brake -- Modified double baffle muzzle brake
Gun recording and laying -- INS based auto laying.
Rs 3000 crore deal to buy 145 M777 ultra light howitzers from the USA defence manufacturer BAE Systems......The M777 is a 155mm 39 calibre towed gun and is the world's first 155mm howitzer weighing less than 10000 lbs (4218 kg). The M777 can fire 5 rounds per minute and its firing range is about 30 km maximum.

India orders 145 M777 ultra light howitzers from BAE Systems - India News - IBNLive

It weighs 3020 kg which is comparable with M777 artillery. Caliber is also 45 instead of 39. Max range is 39 km Vs 30 km. Then why are we even considering buying M777.

Re: DRDO 155mm Artillery Program

Only the ordnance weighs 3020 kg (barrel+breech assembly). Add to that the APU, trailer, recoil absorber, gun cradle with rammer, electronics, seats, crane, road wheels & suspension, elevation & traverse gear and all other stuff and the entire system weighs more than 15,000 kgs.

Re: DRDO 155mm Artillery Program

M777 can easily be hung under the larger heli's and be transported to mountainous region along the Chinese border...
Why do we need heli's transporting artillery when we can have truck mounted artillery in areas, generally truck's have a gradability of upto 70% and an enormous torque range to traverse in those places.

The landscape and infrastructure in northeast facing is not suited for wheeled vehicle when one requires a quick movement of logistics...we need heavy lift helicopters for quick movements of men and materials...

Dhanush howitzers all set to play bigger role

Dhanush howitzers all set to play bigger role

Though several companies have come out with heavy-duty artillery guns, sensing the void felt by the Indian Army, only one of these big guns really boomed.

Manufactured by the Ordnance Factory Board, based on technology supplied by Bofors, Dhanush howitzers (155 mm/45 calibre) has a range of 38 km. Notwithstanding last year's barrel bursting experience, the gun's performance was found satisfactory in limited firing trials carried out so far.

Later this month, the indigenous artillery gun would be taken to Sikkim for another round of trial to check its accuracy and range. "We already have a written request from the Army to make 128 of these guns for which we began procuring the material," an OFB official told Deccan Herald at the ongoing Defence Exposition (DefExpo) in Delhi.

Manufactured by the OFB units in Kolkata, Kanpur and Jabalpur, Dhanush suffered a setback last July when its barrel burst during firing in Rajasthan. "It happened because of a defective ammunition supplied by an Army depot in Jabalpur and not because of the gun," he claimed.

The Indian Army has not purchased any artillery gun since the Bofors came in the 1980s. The Swedish howitzers proved its mettle during the Kargil war, but, since then a large of number of artillery guns had to be cannibalised to keep the remaining functional. As repeated efforts to buy new heavy artillery failed in the last decade, the Defence Ministry finally dusted out the old licencing agreement and asked the OFB to manufacture these guns. The Gun Carriage Factory (GCF) in Jabalpur is the integrator, though other units made crucial parts.

The GCF has manufactured six prototypes so far. It was the fourth prototype whose barrel burst. The one displayed at DefExpo is the sixth one, which the OFB claimed to have modified.

Bofors is a 155 mm/39 calibre gun whereas Dhanush is a 155 mm/45 calibre. The enhanced calibre imparts a longer firing range. While the original Bofors had a maximum effective range of 27 km, Dhanush can go up to 38 km. Though there was an original plan of developing a 39 calibre howitzer as well, that plan has been shelved for the time being. Dhanush, however, is not alone in the fray. Two private entities, Tata Power and Bharat Forge, have also developed artillery guns.

Re: DRDO 155mm Artillery Program

Let me give you 1 example:

Distance from Siliguri base at Sevok forrest to the Gurudongmar lake border = 230Km.
Road travel time = 12-14Hrs.
Air travel time (helo) = 40min.

That's why we need heleborne artillery for the mountains.

Why do we need heli's transporting artillery when we can have truck mounted artillery in areas, generally truck's have a gradability of upto 70% and an enormous torque range to traverse in those places.

OBF had made the gun a good part of the decade back. The army woke up just a couple of years back and now they are conducting trials. Had the process been initiated say 6 years back, we would have been mass producing these guns by now.
