We already have all of that, it's just that it is not well known or publicized. We have our own super computers for various simulations (nuclear, non-nuclear, war gaming, satellite data processing), we have our own network for strategic communications, we have our own encrypted data banks, even the BMS we currently use for communication of ORBAT is made by a private company in Bangalore.

Ex-IITian's Bike Lab Is Taking World Class Lab Tests Door To Door To India's Poorest Homes!

Having completed his studies at IIT Roorkee, Amit Bhatnagar got a break at the Universal Studios in America. After working there for a few years, his heart desired something else. He wanted to give back to the society in India. He knew what he wanted to do but the idea would require time and some serious effort from his end.

After three years of relentless work, Amit was able to bring out the "lab in a suitcase". It was his first innovation which enabled any medical practitioner to perform 72 tests out of a suitcase! For those who fear about the results, need not. The results have been certified by AIIMS along with other reputed medical organisations.

The "lab in a suitcase" became very popular and even the Indian Army requested a specially designed medical lab in a suitcase for themselves.

In 2016, Amit Bhatnagar - who is now the Managing Director of Accuster Technologies - helped create a portable diagnosis kit that comes attached to the back of a bike!

"After creating the lab in a suitcase, I wondered if I had truly achieved what I wanted - to ensure that every person living in India has access to affordable yet accurate diagnostic facilities at their doorstep. I felt that I could do more," he told Indiatimes.

"It took me some more time but with the help of Accuture, we have created a complete pathological laboratory attached to the back of a bike. A tent and two attached chairs come with the setup. Now you do not need the assistance of anyone to set up a pathological lab anywhere!"

About 37 different tests could be carried out and the lab weighed just 600 gms.

While a handful of people people living in the cities might be able to afford diagnostic services at Rs 800-900, the masses go untreated for the lack of accurate and affordable diagnosis," he says. "The bike diagnosis comes at a price of Rs 250 only and even if 5 people enrol for the services in a day, it makes a financially viable means of livelihood for the practitioner."

The bike lab model was tested in a village in Hardoi recently where its services were put to use by 200 pregnant women.

These are concrete steps taken towards ensuring the right to good health is a reality for India.

We already have all of that, it's just that it is not well known or publicized. We have our own super computers for various simulations (nuclear, non-nuclear, war gaming, satellite data processing), we have our own network for strategic communications, we have our own encrypted data banks, even the BMS we currently use for communication of ORBAT is made by a private company in Bangalore.

We have nothing in here when it comes to data management and processing. Having super computer doesn't mean you could have a database management server of your own. Every country does have their own server but not database storage. For example NIC does host its service from India itself unlike facebook.in which does have its servers in UAE. But it doesn't mean that the database would be stored in the same place itself. It would be anywhere in any number of storage space across world.
Weibo does have its server in China, but it doesn't mean it does keep all its user information in China only. Please note that there are only few providers which does provide a world wide storage capacity. New entrant in it is Google with its cloud base service which does have its storage portion in India along with whole world. This doesn't mean that India could access each and every database stored over here.

Almost 80% startups fail in the first year, and 95% of total startups fail within 3 years of starting and it's alright. The core of any business is still 'sales'. A good idea with no sales can still flop, there are many startups which were started in the 2000-2010 time frame, they flopped then because the ecosystem did not exist (mobile payments and related ecosystem and public approval), the same kind of startups are becoming famous now.

Those who simply want a profitable business should look into setting a turnkey business based on one of the existing business models, no need to reinvent the wheel. A friend of mine had some money, he simply started a hosting company, whenever his friends ask him "what's so special about it?" he says "nothing, we are a normal web hosting company and we have customers and are profitable", which is more than one can say for the fancy apps that his friends are trying to build to 'revolutionize' the universe. All successful startups have customers first, the app comes later. In fact, the apps were built only to take off some of the work load that the business was receiving. A lot of the ERP apps were made as internal apps to manage clients, even Quora was made as an internal Q and A system for engineers to talk among themselves and create an FAQ, only later did they start a new company out of it.

Look at how Directi/CodeChef grew in the highly saturated marketplace of competitive programming. What's so unique? one could say it's just a forum for competitive programmers, there is no buzz word to market it, still they grew. If this idea was presented to someone today they would say, there are so many programming forums, blogs, online tutorials, Coursera/Elitmus/EdX why do we need one more? but they made it, and it is successful. Same with WebEngage. It deals with analytics reporting just like Google Analytics, no buzzword. Still they are successful and profitable. I think our resident startup guy @Bangalorean will have more wisdom to share.

In a saturated marketplace, getting customers itself is an innovation. But because of the way the 'idea of innovation' has been fed to us just like the 'idea of India', we are unable to think beyond the template of fancy applications that the news channels presents to us as an 'innovation'. We've all heard about those news which come out every month 'IItian makes nuclear power from his urine' 'IItian makes food from garbage' 'IItian eats shit and shits gold' type of silly news articles. The real innovation is happening elsewhere, but the news media is too stupid to recognize it.

Kids today want to make the app first, so that they can call themselves as the CEO of that app while taking pocket money from their father to buy vada paav. I know people who are running out of small apartments, have customers, are making profit, and they haven't even registered a domain or made a fancy app. I know someone who made some type of cooking machine, it was installed in Akshay Patra's kitchen, it provides food to lakhs of kids daily, and the guy got paid to implement the solution. Where as 80% of kids are still busy trying to build the next Facebook. Tumse na ho payega beta.

In terms residents (skip NRIs), it goes to ranks 10th, 6th and 11th respectively (obviously mainlanders dominate in serving the nation).
India has filed over 45,658 patent applications last year.
Among the top 100 PCT Applicant firms, 46 are from Japan, 20 from China, 8 from USA, 3 from Taiwan and then, small numbers (1 or 2) from some rich countries like France.
Unfortunately, no Indian Company in top 100.
Like everywhere, it's just a respectable ranking for a third world country. Honestly, no advantage of bosating in beating smaller low income countries, we aspire to be like them and use our socioeconomic third world status to shield.

Beating many high economies in patents per capita (including USA ), China is now top patent applicant with over 1.1 million applications and 6th worldwide in terms of patents per capita.
For summary:

An eye on neighborhood, Pakistan has filed 886 and Bangladesh with 340 patent applications but in no mood to compare with these insignificant countries.

It's also related to rise in per capita income.
Right now many talented people (including me :bounce. Do not go to research field because the earnings in the beginning are too damn low . A petty MNC can pay you multiple times more for a rather mundane type task.

But with income rise they will become acceptable. If our percapita rises two fold you can see four to five fold increase in the research field. That is what happened in china.

Of course govt and corporations need to increase funding in the r&d and we need more robust IP protection regime.

The Future of Research in Pakistan

Unfortunately, we don’t figure anywhere on the world stage in terms of research in science at the moment.

The first step to promote science in Pakistan is to have a culture that values research. If you don’t inculcate in your PhD’s the value of research, they will never be able to produce new knowledge.

Ten years ago, there were only four string theorists from Pakistan. None of them are in Pakistan anymore. Initially, the idea was that we would start doing theoretical physics out from here because it required next to no financial input. You didn’t need labs. All you required was a laptop and that was it. However, that didn’t work out for a number of reasons. Some were political, some environmental or maybe we were too ambitious too early.

There are a lot of examples of countries closer to home that have limited resources and yet they have made their culture much more conducive to scientific research than ours.

Look at India and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs); they have phenomenal educational institutes and good centers for research, especially in the field of string theory.

When I was doing my post-doc in Harvard, there were a lot of Indian Assistant Professors who were on the prestigious tenure track. Some of them left to go back to their home environment and a decade later, they’re still in India. They are publishing their research and their careers and reputations haven’t suffered because India gives them enough of a research atmosphere.

When I moved back to Pakistan, one of my main goals was to try to build more of a regional nexus. You want people to have international exposure but it’s not very practical to send all your students to the US or UK. It’s much more convenient to send them to places that are more culturally accessible, financially feasible and closer to home. My dream was that since there were so many string theorists in India that we could work more closely with them.

That was basically the plan but it didn’t end up happening. There are ways of making these things work only if there is an institutional or political will. It’s also a question of attitude. The most common question that I used to get was “What are you going to do with string theory?” It is disheartening when you are constantly getting questions like that and you have to keep on explaining and justifying yourself.

Politicians only focus on these immediate short term measures because they are only thinking about the next five years. Look at what 40 years of this short term thinking has done for the country. The major structural issues in the health and education sectors are still where they were decades ago.

The same kind of thinking is passed on to the sciences. People tend you ask you “I don’t have clean water. Why are you doing string theory? What will we get from that?” That’s like saying that there are so many problems in the country, you shouldn’t write literature, poetry or prose.

Right now, Pakistan is in a much better position than it was a few years ago. The resources that are available now, including Fulbright scholarships, collaborations with CERN and other liaisons with the international world are incredible. It’s time for people to really start utilizing these opportunities.

Objects that make us Indian
Two exhibitions that underline why the design discourse needs to deepen and strengthen.

A pair of forthcoming exhibitions in Mumbai aims to distill what it means to be Indian, by urging us to reinterpret everyday objects that populate our domestic lives. Design: The India Story consists of two exhibitions—Objects Through Time and Ideas Through Time, both curated by Divya Thakur, founder and creative director of Design Temple, a Mumbai-based multidisciplinary design studio.

Objects Through Time assembles objects that capture evolution in our lifestyles over the last century. Ideas Through Timeexamines the relevance of eight concepts from traditional Indian philosophy to contemporary design. Paired together, the two put out an intellectual framework around product design, design entrepreneurship, and cultural and national identity.

“We felt there was a need to bring out what has transpired in the country in certain aspects of design and our primary attraction to design was in the domestic sector, to understand how it has evolved and to identify emerging concepts. There is very little documentation of our experience,” explains Thakur of the motivations behindObjects Through Time.

Ideas Through Time was a more “experimental, accidental exploration”, she explains, adding, “the exhibition was not intentional at all. I did not set out to find something. Some concepts jumped out at me and I thought, this is so interesting because it’s from our ancient past and it is so valid even today,” she describes.

The exhibitions also express Thakur’s reputation as a researcher and curator. Alongside her established design practice, she has mounted several shows on aspects of Indian design over the last 12 years, in Milan and at London’s prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum. “After leaving school, the gallery and the museum are probably the only centres for continued education, which is why we tend to keep going as often as we can,” she says.

Home is who we are

Objects Through Time tells 20 stories of more than 100 objects, all of which are classified into five main categories: kitchenware, technology and appliances, security, seating, and surface design.

Fashion, textiles and graphics—the globally recognized hallmarks of contemporary Indian design—are conspicuously absent. The choice of categories was deliberately quotidian, reinforces Thakur, to draw attention to domestic living. “Fashion already has enough of a representation, it’s got a strong footprint. This is really about everyday design, about design in the service of everyday life, about what’s out there and how we can improve,” she clarifies.

As a result, mass-manufactured utility items such as Godrej locks and Prestige cookware are juxtaposed against traditional craft objects and contemporary furniture by emerging Indian designers—just as they might be placed in an Indian home. Yet, why would the average museum-goer get excited about seeing a stainless steel glass or a mixer-grinder, even though they might be “emblematic” of daily life, as Thakur says.

To understand how we live, who we are and to grasp the huge potential, she says, adding, “In every section you will find aspects that make us Indian. These objects define us.” For example, the prevalence of movable furniture such as stools, both in urban and rural homes, speaks of our cultural and social “spontaneity”. The presence of swings underlines the “joyousness” of living in a subtropical climate. The variety in surface materials in Indian homes illustrates “our need to personalize”, explains Thakur. By exploring how we engage with these objects, we can absorb insights into how to shape our home environment going forward.

Museums preserve objects, and objects say a lot about a moment in time and place. (As an example, the British Museum in London, a few years, co-hosted a very successful radio show called A History of the World in 100 Objects, which traced humanity’s progress through a considered selection of 100 objects).

Thakur’s intent is not just ethnographic or academic. She would like to spur entrepreneurship, by highlighting the potential of everyday domestic consumption. “The admirable aspect of the Indian relationship with design so far has been an ability to adapt and invent. I think allowing for that, and going forward, I do think that there is room for greater innovation and there is a lot of opportunity, a lot,” she emphasizes.

The inclusion of works from designers such as Nikita Bhate, Ayush Kasliwal, Sahil and Sarthak Bagga, and Rooshad Shroff, is thus an encouraging expression of contemporary design thinking. Equally, it would be gratifying to see more design-led businesses, of sizable scale. Well-designed home products, just like cars or mobile phones, need a blend of industrial craftsmanship, where design and engineering can come together. For example, countries such as Italy and Germany are dotted with dozens of mid-sized furniture and lighting firms, led by the successful marriage of design, engineering and manufacturing.

For design inspiration, Thakur suggests theIdeas Through Time exhibition, which connects eight tenets of ancient Indian philosophy to current approaches to design and innovation. “Ideas such as universal appropriateness or disruption have been in our timeline for centuries. As a practitioner, the ideas of these concepts are very appealing because I think that they are very useful in understanding design and innovation,” she says, adding that our ancient approach to design “used to be very mindful. It’s very considered, evaluated, thoughtful. It’s not careless at all”.

Design is ubiquitous. Everything surrounding us—every man-made product, service, environment—is designed. But the design community, unlike the art world, has had relatively limited space for discourse in India. All the more reason to make Objects Through Time and Ideas Through Time a must-see. DRDO Research and Innovation Centre develops micro eavesdropping device to counter cross-border terrorism

VELLORE: Research and Innovation Centre of DRDO, IIT - M Research Park, Chennai, has developed advanced devices and micro unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for the defence force and paramilitary for eavesdropping and surveillance along border areas and internal security.

"We have developed a lot of micro devices and equipment using high-end micro electro mechanical system (MEMS), which in turn depends on Integrated Circuit Fabrication (ICF) technology," said director of Research and Innovation Centre V Natarajan on Wednesday. He was speaking on the sidelines of a three-day international conference on Materials Processing and Applications organised by VIT University.

The devices have applications for the defence and paramilitary force for border surveillance and internal security purposes. "It will be very helpful for the defence forces as it will consume less power and also handy in remote and inaccessible areas," he added.

The device has been put in a field trial. "The device developed for eavesdropping will pick sounds by different means. It can detect very low frequency and vibration by MEMS sensor. Even a vehicle moving at a long distance will be detected by the ground vibration. It can also be used in submarines to pick communications through SONAR (sound, navigation and ranging)," he said.

The micro UAVs are also being developed by the centre, he said, adding, "It will be equipped with advanced surveillance cameras and an eavesdropping device."

The communications picked through the devices transferred to the centre, where it will be decoded to help the defence and paramilitary forces.
