Court case against 'Azaan' for hurting sentiments - Movies News - Bollywood - ibnlive

Mumbai: Bollywood movie Azaan, scheduled to be released Friday, has run into rough weather after a Samajwadi Party leader from the city approached the Bombay High Court, saying the film's name hurts Muslim sentiments.

The case was filed after Naeem Akhtar Azmi, the mufti (chief priest) of Sunni Darul-Uloom Mohammediya Minara Masjid, Wednesday issued a 'fatwa' that no film can be named after 'Azaan', the auspicious call to prayers to Muslim faithful.

The 'fatwa' came in response to an open query posed by Mumbai Samajwadi Party vice-president Farookh Ghosi.
IBNLive

"Following the fatwa, I have filed a writ petition in the high court seeking the court's directions to file an FIR (first information report) against the movie producers, director and actors for abusing and exploiting the holy name of 'azaan' for commercial gains, which has hurt Muslim sentiments," Ghosi told IANS.

The petitioner has also demanded a stay on the global release of the film Friday and a ban on the movie till the producers change its name.

The petition is expected to come up for hearing in a day or so, and Ghosi said he has written to the state government seeking its urgent intervention in the matter.

"If the state government fails to respond within the next 24 hours, over 10,000 Muslims along with muftis and maulanas shall stage demonstrations after the Friday afternoon namaaz all over Mumbai," Ghosi warned.
Will be interesting to see the 'secular's ' views about this episode ? Whether the freedom of speech extends to everyone or just mF Hussain ? 8)

If they are taking it to court, as they have a right to, let them wait for the court to pronounce judgement. And let them abide by whatever judgement the court pronounces.

Why all the nonsense about "Muftis and Maulanas" staging demonstrations after Friday prayers? Demonstration is a euphemism for creating trouble.

Crack their skulls if there is any violence or road blocking.

Secularism only comes when M.F. Hussain makes extremely offensive painting and Atheist/Non-Hindus and political party will say "Freedom of Speech"

Others can do anything they want. They can launch FATWA just for a word and political party will support this FATWA. After all, India is secular country

What amazes me is how one person decides that the whole community's sentiments were hurt? Issuance of fatwas has already become a joke. Azan is the call to prayer. How is it hurting anyone's sentiments is anybody's guess. If at all, they should thank the producers for propagating Islam!!
May be this new mufti wanted to make a name for himself and hence the fatwa.

Theres nothing offensive about naming a film "Azaan". Let them demonstrate, who cares. The movie is out, go and watch it. :p

This is a ploy created by the SP to make a political statement of how much they "care" about muslims. The film has released in Arab countries without any controversy and no one has made any claims about "hurting religious sentiments" after the initial brouhaha.
Samajwadi members visit Censorboard CEO's office for Aazaan
Although, I can empathize that the concern was more about whether this is another film that is about stereotyping Muslims as terrorists e.t.c. But still nothing that could be claimed as such and ask a court case to be filed.

And even before this film was released, apparently this was cleared by a group of religious scholars as well.

For those who know Arabic/Urdu, the two words Adhan and Aazaan sound similar but are different and would agree with Joshi.
So again, it does look like a SP ploy to raise this issue, but it will die out cause there is no substance in it.

However, what really got me irritated is that the censor board got them to mute out China in the film because it might displease the Chinese!! Not only our ministers but even our censor board is spineless.

On a lighter note, I actually did go see the film with nieces and nephew yesterday. Overall, the actions sequences are professionally done and the music is ok but the storyline is a bit jumpy. 3/5 stars

The fatwa is nonsensical and the chap should be told to do one.

See not everyone has a one track mind like you. :)

You should know your religion much better. Fatwa has no binding affect on anyone apart from the person issuing it. Even the nutjobs in saudi govt agree with that assessment of a fatwa.

No brain dead socialists to condemn this form of communalism, I see.
They denigrate Hindus for protesting degenerate portrayals like 'Rape of India', not 'Rape of Hinduism', mind you.
That was to be condemned as Hindu Talibanism,
But the use of a name is heinous.
Germany should've won the second world war, it is the communists who are the greater of the two evils, not the Nazis.

At least for the Fatwa, the movie will get some publicity.

Nobody cares for these guys; these efforts are just made for attention....

I'd deploy the entire police force in full riot gear around the theatres, and do pre-emptive arrests of these rabble rousers. If they turn disorderly, order the police to shoot the lawbreakers on sight. Our politicians are too pussy to use such tactics.

Not really, I'm just pointing out that Fascism is the lesser of two evils, and I think the death toll for both ideologies would agree with me.
With that logic i say theists are also evil. Too many people have died and been discriminated because of one's belief in God and religion.

I agree with that statement whole-heartedly, I'm pro-Atheism, I would've actually joined anti-Hindus antitheists, provided they were true anti-theists, but they've double standards, compare their shrieks on Bhushan's assault to the silence on professors getting their hands chopped off.
Why were you guys so quiet?, do tell me, why?
