A senior officer has said that the number of transgressions by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China into the Burtse sector of Ladakh has increased considerably since they pitched two tents there for fifteen days in April.

Keeping this in mind, India is planning to construct 25 additional border outposts (BOPs) along the Chinese border, the officer said. These BOPs will be constructed in Ladakh sector where the average distance between two posts is 20-25km.

The Director General (DG) of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Ajay Chaddha, said the force would augment the strength of 98 existing BOPs by increasing manpower. There are currently 150 outposts along the Line of Actual Control. He said the force was also planning to recruit around 900 women.

"By 2017, we should increase the strength of 98 BOPs and complete the construction of the new ones," he said.

"We provide jawans with satellite phones, water purifiers and colour televisions in outposts that can be located at an altitude of 15,000 feet. We have also started providing low emission bukhaaris (stove) to the jawans as it is better for their health," he added.

The officer said recruiting people for the force from all over India had its limitations.

"Earlier, people who had joined the force came from border areas; they were already acclimatised to the harsh weather conditions. But now even people from the south and the plains join and are posted at very high altitudes. There have been incidents of cardiac arrest," the officer pointed out.

Recruiting from people from the border areas is a good idea, since they would be more committed to protecting their land.
