1,000 cyber attacks on Games, most from China

Six cyber networks of the Delhi Commonwealth Games faced at least 1,000 "potential" attacks in the 12 days of the event that concluded last night — that is, more than three attacks every hour.

Roughly three-fourths of these attempts to breach and paralyse the Games networks originated from China, experts in the Cyber Crisis Management Group (CMG), which was monitoring the networks round the clock, told The Indian Express.

A clutch of attacks — between October 3 and October 5 — originated in Pakistan. Some attempts to penetrate CWG circuits were made from Mumbai as well, top sources in the CMG said.

"In all, our systems detected around 5,000 incidents, about 20 per cent of which could be described as potential attacks. Many were 'denial-of-service' attacks, which, if successful, would jam entire networks. But none of these attempts succeeded in penetrating even the first of the three layers of cyber security systems that we had installed," said a member of the CMG.

The CMG, which operated from an out-of-bounds Cyber Command Centre set up on the seventh floor of the Games Organising Committee (OC) headquarters, included cyber experts from the intelligence agencies, Delhi Police and the Government of India's Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).

The cyber security infrastructure which successfully detected, identified and neutralized the attacks was set up in only two months after Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar authorized the cyber CMG headed by CERT-In chief Gulshan Rai, who was empowered to disable sections of the CWG computer networks in case of a serious cyber attack.

The six networks, including those of Games data, security, venues, Internet services and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), were linked to the Command Centre, which constantly monitored over 3,000 computers, 3,000 CCTVs and 1,800 network switches. A special software detected and mapped all "deviant behaviour" on logs, which were examined by the CMG several times a day.

On October 13, National Security Adviser Shiv Shankar Menon visited the Command Centre and reportedly hailed the cyber security initiative as a huge success. While declining to discuss the specifics of the system, Harsh Kumar, the OC's head of technology, said, "The success of our system was that officials from all agencies such as the NTRO (National Technical Research Organisation) and IB, as well from vendors like MTNL, ECIL (Electronics Corporation of India Ltd) and TCIL (Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd) worked together as a group."
Added Anil Chowdhary, the OC's Adviser, Security, "The cyber security systems used in the CWG are now a model which can be replicated in major national networks, and used for cyber security in critical sectors such as railways, aviation and telecommunications."

Shame on these state sponsored cyber terrorists. They can not digest Indian games to be successful, since China and its sister concern was not able to conduct physical terrorist attacks, they went low to trespass our websites and sabotage our cyber assets.

Nothing unusual.

China has the best Cyber Warfare infrastructure.

They have been developing it for long as per the China Defence Report to the Senate many years ago.

CHINA IS ASIAN POWER THAT THINKS AND OPERATES LIKE A STARVING SLUM KID BORN AND RAISED IN A GHETTO

They take every opportunity in the world, no matter how small, no matter how undignified, no matter how demeaning to themselves - to try and embarrass India.

Nothing is beneath them . Even after they hosted the Olympics....they still tried to nail India's image for a relatively small event like the CWG.
I wonder if there are any thinking Chinese citizens who actually question why such a major country like China has to stoop so low.

They insult their own dignity and make everyone lose respect for their culture.
Look at their reaction to the NOBEL PRIZE Winner. Again the most bombastic over-reaction to an old man and his old wife !!

Same thing with the Dalai Lama.

I am sure the Chinese guys on this website and worldwide will deny everything. Those servers in China were also run by ghosts.

Minghegy......I suppose you think that those 1000 attacks from China based servers 2 hours into the opening of the CWG games was the work of Ghosts.

What amazes me about you Chinese guys is that no amount of evidence...no matter how overwhelming can make you admit anything.
You are like a bunch of guys who believe your own BS.

Chinese Govt and Chinese media doesnt give a shit about India. Is that why China is the best friend and ally of the one country on this planet that is the biggest single exporter of terrorism. Is that just a coincidence in your mind ??

CWG did not get much publicity in China at all. As far as i know, China Central TV broadcasted a short clip of the openning ceremony in its most popular daily Serial News Broadcast(新闻联播), and it praised the ceremoney was wonderful.

Most negative reports regarding CWG were published by your lovely western media.

You really need to get your fact straight.

China chief suspect in major cyber attack
.
By Peter Foster, China Correspondent and agencies
.

4:40PM BST 03 Aug 2011

.
Security experts have discovered the biggest series of cyber attacks to date, involving the infiltration of the networks of 72 organisations including the United Nations, governments and companies around the world.
.
A security expert who has been briefed on the hacking said the evidence points to China has been accused of mounting a five-year hacking operation that stole industrial and national secrets on an unprecedented scale, after an investigation by a leading internet group uncovered a huge international security breach.
.
More than 70 organisations, including the United Nations, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and defence contractors for both the UK and US were said to have been victims of the attack which was the work of a single "state actor".
.
McAfee, the internet security group, stopped short of naming China as responsible, but independent security experts said the choice of targets, such as the Olympic Committee before the 2008 Olympic Games, suggested Beijing was the most likely culprit.
.

"Everything points to China," said James Lewis, a cyber security expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies who was briefed on the report, "You can think of at least three other large programs attributed to China that look very similar. It's a pattern of activity that we've seen before."
.
The victims of the attacks were all tracked to a single computer server, McAfee said in its 14-page report which added that some networks, including that of the UN secretariat in Geneva, has been penetrated for two years by the malicious software.
.
"Even we were surprised by the enormous diversity of the victim organizations and were taken aback by the audacity of the perpetrators," wrote Dmitri Alperovitch, McAfee's vice president of threat research.
.
"Companies and government agencies are getting raped and pillaged every day. They are losing economic advantage and national secrets to unscrupulous competitors. This is the biggest transfer of wealth in terms of intellectual property in history," he added.
.
It was unclear precisely what purpose stolen data had been used for, with other targets including sensitive data on US military systems and satellite communications.
.
As well as the governments of the United States, Taiwan, India, South Korea, Vietnam and Canada; other targets included the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN); the World Anti-Doping Agency; and an array of companies high-tech enterprises..
.
Other experts have warned against rushing to accuse China which routinely denies being behind hack attacks, which are attributed to independent actors in China, or other countries using China as a smokescreen for their activities.
.
The report was released to coincide with the start of the Black Hat and Defcon conferences in Las Vegas at which both security expert and hackers gather to discuss the growth threat of cyber intrusions.
.
Earlier this year senior Obama administration officials called for the Geneva and Hague conventions governing the conducts of wars to be adapted to reflect the possibility of cyber attacks on civilian installations such as hospitals and power stations.
.
American security chiefs are openly moving to strengthen the US's ability to deal with cyber attacks, with the departments of Defence, Homeland Security and several other federal agencies openly recruiting in Las Vegas.
.
The National Security Agency (NSA) was among those hoping to find future agents among the hackers and computer enthusiasts who paid $150 in cash to register anonymously at the Defcon conference.
.
"Today it's cyber warriors that we're looking for, not rocket scientists," Richard George, technical director of the NSA's Information Assurance Directorate, the agency's cyber-defence side told Reuters, "That's the race that we're in today. And we need the best and brightest to be ready to take on this cyber warrior status."

BBC News - Japan defence firm Mitsubishi Heavy in cyber attack
Neither the Japanese government nor MHI have said who may be responsible. A report in one Japanese newspaper said Chinese language script was detected in the attack against MHI.

But China rebuffed suggestions it could be behind the attacks.

"China is one of the main victims of hacking... Criticising China as being the source of hacking attacks not only is baseless, it is also not beneficial for promoting international co-operation for internet security," foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said <----(This is the only lie and bargain chip; they frequently use when exposed).

China is protecting herself is what the Chinese would claim.

It is in line with what Hu Jinato said in a Chinese Communist Party magazine

that "We must clearly see that international hostile forces are intensifying the strategic plot of westernizing and dividing China "¦ We should deeply understand the seriousness and complexity of the ideological struggle, always sound the alarms and remain vigilant, and take forceful measures to be on guard and respond."

It may appear so, but that is not a fair comment to make!

Not only they hacked their emails but with Indian guise. Like they were selling fake medicines with made in India print. The pattern is quite clear and must be noted by all concerned.

Former student from China Hacked Indian Military Research Firms: Report

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/30/t...is-linked-to-chinese-ex-graduate-student.html

he owner of the alias, according to online records, is Gu Kaiyuan, a former graduate student at Sichuan University, in Chengdu, China, which receives government financing for its research in computer network defense.

Mr. Gu is now apparently an employee at Tencent, China's leading Internet portal company, also according to online records. According to the report, he may have recruited students to work on the university's research involving computer attacks and defense.

The researchers did not link the attacks directly to government-employed hackers. But security experts and other researchers say the techniques and the victims point to a state-sponsored campaign.
Each attack began, as is often the case, with an e-mail intended to lure victims into opening an attachment. Indian victims were sent an e-mail about India's ballistic missile defense program.

That is extremely serious. Why did US not drop the A bomb on China - it was perhaps a better target.

CWG website was crashed 'deliberately' - India News - IBNLive

New Delhi: The Commonwealth Games (CWG) website, which got more than seven million visitors everyday, buckled not because of technical glitches but a deliberate mischief, sources said.
Few weeks ago, the Commonwealth Games website came under cyber attack which was possibly routed from China.
Sources tell CNN-IBN that within two hours of the Games opening ceremony, the website faced massive cyber attacks, possibly from China. India's Computer Emergency Response Team (CERTIN) had to set up a special cyber control room at the games village. But the cyber attacks continued till the end of Games.

The servers which were connected to ticket sales, event timings, and accreditation for authorized personnel and barriers controlling entry and exit into the games Village, all came under attack. The website became unusually slow and did not display correct timings for different events.

Prevention/Defence is better than curing/blaming!!...

I MUST tell that all our government sites have decades old infra & security than many of our pc's.. Infact, they didn't bother abt sites & their functioning. They simply come & go..

So we should stop complaining china hackers every time. Pakies are also doing it daily..They recently invaded the CBI site..

Even our own hackers are too hacking our own Army sites, govt sites against their corruption and support for Hazare..
