China's own submarines could use the station to extend their range in the Indian Ocean.
i hope our indian naval planners and thinking of expanding our
submarine programe with the Vietnamese and build towards a permanent
presence for IN at a location in the north of VN.

Gwadar is a strategic asset for China. Once CPEC (China Pakistan Economic Corridor) project completes, China's will get a secure energy and trade route. Our leaders never tried to recapture Gilgit Baltistan and the outcome is beforehand.
absolutely !

But 80% of the funds flowing into Pakistan are meant for building power stations, which will be owned and operated by Chinese companies, sources said.
quite realistic - prc are acquiring power companies worldwide , so the pattern is already established !

@Rashna - thanks for seeking out the article - it's a great read - i dont agree with all of it even though it's basic
point , that the prcfolks are in pak not so much for pak but for themselves.

China is Pakistan's new East India company..
you've summed it up in one very short sentence - congrats !

My take on this - what is there to ( as the title says ) " hammer out " ?
with 46 billion you can buy all of ISI and the important punjabis who control the nation
youve bought the country !

unlike the points made by cyril almeida in the article quoted by member Rashna,
i dont quite agree with cyril ( if ive interpreted him correctly ) that the whole thing will be a flop .

the military strategic value is there and at the very least the prcfolks will go ahead even if only for that ,
they do have the money i.e. at least 10 billion to throw , obviously they wont bring on the 46 b in one go

most likely they will throw 10 b in Nawasz's and the v vip punjabis's faces and see how it goes
in return - they will insist on putting their troops and staff in gwadar and along the route

if it works economically , they will pump more in -otherwise they will hang on to their port rights
i.e. to use it as a submarine and naval base .

meanwhile the nawaz's and v vip punjabis will get richer and the poor packlanders
will be left wondering where the money went !

The thing is just signing MoUs worth 46 billion dollars is one thing but how much of those deals actually fructify is another . I don't think not more than few billion dollars will ever see the light of the day .
In vibrant Gujarat summit 400 billion $ worth of MoUs were signed in this year that is 10 times that of Pakistans but only 25 % will ever see the light of the day , this is just in 1 Indian state .

Thanks for the mention. It is quite likely that the whole thing will flop as cyril almeida pointed out. Pakistan hasn't really benefited from any of these projects. Back in the old days Russia had financed a steel mill in karachi and it now lies abandoned. Pakistan has been the beneficiary of such aids and grants right from the inception when it started taking sides while India stayed non aligned.

Pakistan was well ahead of India in infrastructure thanks to foreign grants, however all this served no purpose because any country can fall apart due to mismanagement and corruption. Pakistan hasn't been able to build strong institutions and keeps re-writing its own history. The strange part is that they keep finding donors who hope to use this country for their own means. Pakistanis suffer no matter what aid flows in to their country because most of it is just a mirage. China is also gaining the dubious reputation of leaving its tasks unfinished. China abandoned one project in pakistan after pakistan failed to secure a guarantor for it. So their commitment depends on what they earn back from the investment. China also wants to provide employment to chinese who are now facing unemployment in China because of a slow down in industrial production. How does it help pakistan when this investment neither creates employment for its own people nor is something which can retained by them in their control. These projects will be owned and run by the Chinese.

Do check out another thread of mine about SCS.

at this moment there is more for PRC to loose by disturbing the Paki relationship if one compares to elevating the relationship. Hence the latter at this moment. I for one have no doubt PRC will not hold Pakis (emotionless - metal) hands like a brother would for long (there are better golden handshakes elsewhere).

The Pakis have a way of bringing (unwritten threats) fear into nations to keep having relations with them. Have to give them credit. But Pakis are also smarting themselves about PRC relationship. If the Pakis are used like agents (again) by PRC into Arab Sunni GCC world that would be funny. Make sure the payment is upfront and exaggerate for past dues. The Pakis getting support by PRC into Arab world might also not work like before.

The largest part of the project would provide electricity to energy-starved Pakistan, based mostly on building new coal-fired power plants. The country is beset by hours of daily scheduled power cuts because of a lack of supply, shutting down industry and making life miserable in homes—a major reason for the election in 2013 of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who promised to solve the electricity crisis.

The plans envisage adding 10,400 megawatts of electricity at a cost of $15.5 billion by 2018. If those projects deliver, plugging the electricity deficit, Mr. Sharif would be able to go into the 2018 election saying he has lived up to his pledge.
"Coal is very important to meet the future energy needs of Pakistan, we think that Pakistan should take full advantage of 175 billion tons of coal reserves in Thar desert of Sindh," said Weikai Gao, Chief Executive Officer of Global Mining China. [bold added]
Nice to see China cutting down on coal and selling it to Pak :D + Making the Pak govt buy all electricity produced.

Beijing to Shut All Major Coal Power Plants to Cut Pollution
(Bloomberg) -- Beijing, where pollution averaged more than twice China's national standard last year, will close the last of its four major coal-fired power plants next year.

The capital city will shutter China Huaneng Group Corp.'s 845-megawatt power plant in 2016, after last week closing plants owned by Guohua Electric Power Corp. and Beijing Energy Investment Holding Co., according to a statement Monday on the website of the city's economic planning agency. A fourth major power plant, owned by China Datang Corp., was shut last year.
A note for the management students: This is how we balance trade.
To balance the accounts...sell your bull shit to your "friend" claiming it as dry fuel.

Bonus for Pakistan: Pak citizens will have another round of GO NAVAZ Go + Akram will sit in pavilion for another innings

u need to understand coal is cheaper and can be clean thanks to advanced tech.

even for a country leading in hydro and nuclear power coal is broadly used to balance off-peak power supply.

Great stuff.

That aid will actually be used by the Chinese companies who will be building the Corridor and other infrastructure.
