Chinese pensioner on trial for 'murdering doctor during Cultural Revolution'

A Chinese octogenarian has reportedly been put on trial for murdering and dismembering a doctor at the height of his country's chaotic Cultural Revolution.

The defendant, from Zhejiang province in east China, was accused of killing a man he believed was a spy in 1967, according to an online report by the state-run China News Service that was later deleted.

The man, named only as Mr Qiu, stands accused of using a piece of rope to strangle his victim, who was named as Dr. Gong. After committing the murder, Mr Qiu allegedly hacked off the man's legs and buried his body.]

While the alleged murder took place more than four decades ago, Mr Qiu was reportedly only arrested in July last year. He was put on trial this week at his home in Zhejiang. So far no verdict has been made public.

China was consumed by mass violence during the decade-long Cultural Revolution, which began in 1966 after Chairman Mao urged his followers to rise up against the bourgeois and attack ancient cultures and beliefs.

Groups of 'Red Guards' made up of fanatical students ran riot in Chinese cities. Churches and temples were ransacked and books torched.

Hundreds of thousands of lives are thought to have been claimed while millions suffered persecution, including academics, property owners, teachers and even doctors.

Decades on, public discussion of the traumatic period remains largely a taboo. No death toll has been made public by Chinese authorities and the Cultural Revolution is officially viewed as a severe "set-back".

Similarly, the Great Famine that swept through rural China during the late 1950s and early 1960s is still officially blamed on "natural disasters" rather than Mao's catastrophic polices.

On Wednesday, reports of the octogenarian's unusual trial triggered heated online debate.

"What about those big names who started the Cultural Revolution? How come they never took any responsibility?" one micro-blogger asked, according to Hong Kong's South China Morning Post.

*****************************************

China is a tricky place to be in.

When Mao started the Cultural Revolution, this man must have been a hero of the workers and the peasants and adored by the people.

Now that Deng has changed China totally the opposite, he is a criminal!

What a schizophrenic attitude and how fickle as the weather vane!

And so deceitful is the Communist regime that they have not published a white paper on the Cultural Revolution, nor has given the figures killed.

They are clever manipulators too. When the Great Famine happened because of faulty govt policies, they blamed the weather!

And, wonders of wonders, these people with nationalistic schizophrenia lecture others about their way of life!
