Chinese Frigate 'Stranded' in Disputed Waters

BEIJING — A Chinese naval frigate has run aground while patrolling disputed waters in the South China Sea, the defense ministry said July 13, amid tensions with the Philippines over territorial claims.

The ship was on "routine patrol" when it became stranded near Half Moon Shoal in the Spratly Islands on July 11, the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

The shoal is off the Philippine island of Palawan.

No one was injured in the accident and the People's Liberation Army's Navy was now organizing a rescue, the statement said, but gave no further details.

The Sydney Morning Herald on July 13 quoted Western diplomatic sources as saying the frigate, which has been discouraging fishing boats from the Philippines from entering the area, was "thoroughly stuck."

The next time Chinis want to claim other's land, at least avoid looking like an idiot when you do it.

China warship stranded on Philippines' Hasahasa Shoal

China on Friday said rescue operations for its warship that ran aground on a shoal in disputed waters of the South China Sea is in progress.

The Chinese embassy in Manila said their Navy frigate accidentally ran aground on the Half Moon Shoal of Nansha Island on Wednesday while on a patrol mission. The shoal is known as Hasahasa in the Philippines.

"According to the information we got from the Information Department of the Ministry of National Defense of China, around 7pm of July 11, a frigate of Chinese Navy ran aground accidentally at Half Moon Shoal of Nansha Isands during a routine patrol mission, with no personnel injured," it said.

"Currently the rescue work by the Chinese Navy is underway," a statement by the Chinese Embassy in Manila said.

Australia's Sydney Morning Herald in a report on Friday described the warship as "a People's Liberation Army Navy vessel, believed to be No. 560, a Jianghu-class frigate."

The Australian newspaper said the Chinese ship ran aground in waters within 200 kilometers off the Philippine coast, which is the country's Exclusive Economic Zone.

The report went on to say that the ship has been involved in driving Filipino fishing boats aggressively from the area in the past.

Although China said the incident was an accidental grounding, it could become another thorny diplomatic and security issue since it happened in Philippine territorial waters.

It also came at a time after the two Asian neighbors figured in recent squabbles over some areas, including the Bajo de Masinloc or Scarborough Shoal, a rich fishing ground off the country's northwestern shores and near the West Philippines Sea, also referred to as South China Sea.

China claims the West Philippine Sea nearly in its entirety even as it overlaps with the Philippines' and other countries' territories.

That must be their strategy. Give up your islands or we park our toxic junk on them! The devious PLAN has come up with new strategies to terrorize its neighbors! :tsk:

This reminds me of any earlier argument here that China claims territory based on its history of mapping disputed areas. China should make sure its charts are accurate. :)

Chinese fishing fleet heads towards Nansha Islands

A joint oceangoing fishing operation involving 30 boats set sail for the Nansha Islands in the South China Sea on Thursday from South China's Hainan province. It is one of the largest fishing activities in Hainan's history, according to the local fishery authority. Their destination for the 20-day fishing operation is near the waters of Yongshu Reef.

According to local fishery authorities, the fleet consists of a 3,000-ton supply vessel and 29 fishing boats.

Dont mock the Chinese, folks! A decade or two later, CCP will be convincing its citizens that the rusted remains of this ship are in fact, conclusive evidence of those islands belonging to China! Its all part of the PLAN!

Are you going to let massive Chinese fishing fleet plunder your waters? You have perfect leverage with this stranded warship... do something!

There have been suspicions that this is a China ploy to have a reason to bring in more ships to the area in a rescue mission propaganda. Later on this ship might never leave the shoal at all. 9-dashed line coming to completion following failure of ASEAN talks to come up with a binding code of conduct with china. Wake up ASEAN.. china is at the doorstep!

From wiki

In 1999, Malaysia occupied Gabriela Silang Reef (Erica Reef) and Pawikan Reef (Investigator Shoal), causing the Philippines to protest further. Due to this pressure, with China's Mischief Reef just 130 miles (210 km) off Palawan and Vietnam's Pigeon Reef and Malaysia's Investigator Shoal just 150 miles (240 km) off Palawan, the Philippines decided to occupy Ayungin Reef (Second Thomas Reef) in 1999. No structure is built on the reef. Soldiers stationed there take shelter at BRP Sierra Madre, a Philippine naval ship that went aground in the reef shortly before the Philippines decided to occupy it.[9] Together with Rizal Reef (Commodore Reef), Ayungin Reef can give the Philippines a sentry advantage in stopping other countries' occupation of features nearest to the Philippines (see map below).

How can a frigate with all modern sonar and depth sounding get aground?

Is it a modern ship or a tub from the KMT days?
