Neither, it is the light tanks used by mountain brigades, with hydraulic suspension and new electronics, I believe Pakistani army has already test-driven on some of them. The turret you saw in the first picture is without cover, you can see how advanced it is.

by the way, this is type 99G, not the most advanced one in PLA though

this is the MBT-3000, a 125mm Smoothbore, quite a counter-balance vs. Indian T72s and T90s, by MBT-3000, you know who will have them in near future,
Since we don't name our Tanks with MBTs. Having fun, and you are welcome.

You seem to be a military illiterate.

There is no distinction now of tank.

Bone up and not act an imbecile!
Only an imbecile will claim there is no distinction of tank.

Then again been a military illiterate it is good to have our beloved brigadier around to teach us that.

But then the Peking Man has been discovered..

Classification has always been determined by the prevailing theories of armoured warfare, which have been altered in turn by rapid advances in technology. No one classification system works across all periods or all nations; in particular, weight-based classification was inconsistent between countries and eras.
The weight classification system has been eliminated due to the world-wide adoption of the main battle tank. Modern tank designs favour a modular universal design eliminating these sorts of classifications from modern terminology. All main battle tanks are typically armed with weapons with similar characteristics but some may be armoured more than others.

After World War II, less expensive armoured cars and more specialised tracked vehicles gradually took over the roles of light tanks. Heavy tanks were shown to be incapable of keeping up with mobile warfare, but advances in engine, weapon, and armour technology allowed medium tanks to acquire the best characteristics of heavy tanks—the ultimate in mobility, firepower, and protection were rolled into the main battle tank (MBT).

Re: New light tank for operating on the Tibetan Plateau

Main Battle Tank is a modern designation of a type of armoured fighting vehicle (AFV), describing a vehicle designed to function as the mainstay of an armoured force. Tank designations during the Second World War generally focused on the weight of the vehicle and/or the thickness of its armour, dividing tanks into "light", "medium" and "heavy" classifications. Main Battle Tanks of the Second World War tended to be in the "medium" category....

Main Battle Tanks

After the Second World War, specialized vehicles took over the reconnaissance role, and tank development merged the best characteristics of medium and heavy tanks into a new category of tank - the Main Battle Tank. Advances in technology, tank design and new materials for armour meant that capabilities could be increased without resorting to "heavy" designs, though weights did in fact increase. The development of HEAT ammunition (High Explosive, Anti-Tank) during the Second World War made steel impractical, and new materials such as Chobham armour began to be be employed. Vulnerability of tanks to HEAT rounds (easily carried by infantrymen and potentially plentiful on the post WW II battlefield in a variety of weapons of increasing range) meant that mobility and weapons power became more important factors in AFV design than armour protection. The phrase Main Battle Tank grew to have international acceptance, and described a tank armed and armoured to deal with as many different types of threats as possible.

It is hard to post specs of something that does not exist (Type 99KM).

As for ZTZ-99G it is just slightly improved version of original ZTZ-99. There are improvements in FCS and overall such things, nothing especially significant as we can know.

Since you are so fond of wiki:
A light tank is a tank variant initially designed for rapid movement, and now primarily employed in the reconnaissance role, or in support of expeditionary forces where main battle tanks cannot be made available. Early light tanks were generally armed and armored similar to an armored car, but used tracks in order to provide better cross-country mobility.

I am not fond of Wiki. It is just that it is easy to use to inform those who are clueless.

If you understood military, you would not show such delightful ignorance.

But I will confess that it is very difficult to teach a military illiterate about the military, be it tactics or military technology. A basic knowledge as a baseline is indeed required.

I will still try in the most simplistic way..

Tanks classifications were there in WWII and to some extent a little later too.

With better technology and armour for instance Chobam, the space for light tanks was taken by the equally armour protected specialised vehicles like the ICV.

The basic aim of a tank is to fight another tank.

Given the armour protection of tanks these days, the guns that can defeat modern tanks at reasonable ranges requires a large vehicle to carry them. If there is a large caliber guns on a light tank, it will have to compromise on muzzle velocity in interest of saving weight. While such a gun can take on tanks at close range, it will lack the penetration power.

If on the other hand, there is a high muzzle velocity gun, it will have to sacrifice gun caliber in interest of saving weight. These guns may penetrate targets at longer distance but lack the explosive power to disable some tanks.

The modern Infantry Combat Vehicles have the characteristics of a Light Tank with the additional bonus of carrying infantry soldiers.

The only countries that has the capability of expeditionary force is the US and Russia. Which light tank are they using?

China has an expeditionary force in Tibet where it is using what you term as Light Tank?

This is the part of the WIki you quoted that you conveniently forgot.

The light tank has been one of the few tank variants to survive the development of the main battle tank, and has seen use in a variety of roles including support of light airborne or amphibious forces and reconnaissance. Modified IFVs are assuming these roles in many militaries due to their immediate availability, a cheaper alternative to developing and fielding a pure light tank.

The ZTZ99 (also known as Type 99, industrial designation WZ123) manufactured by China Northern Industries Group Corporation (CNGC) is the most advanced main battle tank (MBT) fielded by the PLA. First entering the PLA service in late 2001, the ZTZ99 provides a significant improvement in firepower, mobility, and protection compared to older Chinese-made tanks. As a 'high-end' MBT, the ZTZ99 was only built in a small number (~200) due to high unit price (~US$1.9 Million in 1999). These tanks are currently deployed by two elite armour regiments in Beijing and Shenyang Military Region respectively. Some of the ZTZ99's technologies have been used to upgrade the less expensive ZTZ96 MBT.

ZTZ96 Main Battle Tank

The ZTZ96 (also known as Type 96 or Type 88C) is the second-generation main battle tank (MBT) in service with the PLA. The tank was developed from the Type 85-IIM/III series introduced in the 1990s for the export market. The PLA had received over 1,500 examples of the ZTZ96 by 2005. Production continued until 2005~06 when it was superseded by the ZTZ96G featuring improved fire-control and armour package. The ZTZ96G is believed to be approaching the ZTZ99 in terms of firepower, armour, and fire-control. A report by Jane's Defence Weekly in 2006 suggested that Thailand may be interested in acquiring the Type 96G (or an improved model).

It is a light tank that is intended to provide armored firepower, mobility and sensing in otherwise hard to reach areas where the threat of enemy armor is low. Therefor the need of armour is very much less.
A tank with this size can be easier transported by future heavy lifters than say type 96.MBT.
And since it is unlikely to face other MBTs in that area, it means targets softer than MBTs. Which explains the 105mm which allows you to carry more ammunitions.
And I disagree that ICV can be considered a light tank. Or visa versa.
What you call it is irrelevant, my point is they serve a different role than type 96 MBT or type 99 MBT.

You prove yourself a good Communist Chinese propagandist.

You have to be right and the world is wrong even when the facts fly in your face.

Mao was 100% right when he could twist the blade into the guts, but once dead became 30% wrong!

I am sure you are awaiting the CCP direction on the issue.

The Chinese forum also indicates that the tanks mentioned are MBTs.

But then they are also wrong and you are the sole Joe who is right!

Mind does not wander.

Subtlety beguiles you!

In Punjabi, it is called the Mai Dasiya syndrome.

China classifies them as MBT, but you go hammer and tongs to prove the impossible i.e. that they are light tanks and go into a discourse of no value and irrelevance to prove the PLA wrong and the current mode of classifying tanks and ICVs.

You are greater than the PLA in deciding the nomenclature!

Mai Dasiya!!!!!!!

In face of the facts, you crank and poodlefake with irrelevance indicating you have no clue of tank technology or warfare as such!

So the PLA is lead and staffed by goofs calling these tanks as MBTs and you are the genius who knows that they are but Light Tanks, right?
