The article says India will be a branch of central line, which seems starts from China, connecting Burma, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, joining central line at Iran. From the country it passes, it's easy to tell how likely it will happen. Beside the article also mention the tracks are different. It simply won't happen in this decade.

bingo!
India now needs not 200KMH-level or 350KHM-level highspeed trains at all.

it would be already a great achievement for India ,if india were to promote its average train speed to 80KM/H.
The fastest trains in India now travel at a speed of 147 km/h. Ofcourse, that is on certain sections, for various reasons, most notably unmanned crossings.

Don't worry. We're gettin' there. Even as you're gettin to your " 350Km-level highspeed trains".

no offence, what I dicuss is not the speed of top class train, but the speed of average service of the whole railway system.

I think that average service speed of India trains system is still less 80KM/H ,isn't it ?

in fact, although CHina has 6000+KM long highspeed railways, the average service speed of the whole CHina's railway sysem is still about 100 KM KM/hours, I think, because most Chinese cargo trains still run with a average speed of less 80KM/H.

if India could promote its railway average service speed to 80KM/H,that would be a great achievement to India.

at lest Now, it is unnecessay for india to compete CHina on railway-construction...frankly speaking, even USA can not compete China on the infrastructure construction....
what India needs is the not best infrastructure, but proper infrastructure.

Don't sweat it. None taken.

There are two reasons why India don't need a "high speed train service" right about now:

- The first is obvious, and you stated it, India is not at the stage of its economic development where a high-speed rail network is warranted yet. Perhaps in the next 8-10 years, we will see high-speed rail networks planted across the country. Infact, "six corridors have already been identified for technical studies on the setting up of high-speed rail corridors:Delhi-Chandigarh-Amritsar, Pune-Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Hyderabad-Dornakal-Vijayawada-Chennai, Howrah-Haldia, Chennai-Bangalore-Coimbatore-Ernakulam, Delhi-Agra-Lucknow-Varanasi-Patna. These high-speed rail corridors will be built as elevated corridors in keeping with the pattern of habitation and the land constraints. During the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Tokyo in December 2006, Japan assured cooperation to India in creating a high speed link between New Delhi and Mumbai. In January 2009, the then Railway Minister Lalu Prasad expressed keen interest in introducing bullet-trains in India."

- The second is even more obvious: India is densely populated but not as geographically large as China, with large tracts of varied, depopulated inhospitable land that requires traversal. In terms of pure distance alone, the times required for conveyance of goods to market is more expeditious than in, say, China. As a consequence, transportation times and efficiency are less disparate, and as "high-speed rail networks" are set up in the country in future, India's competitive advantage will increase still further! In addition, we already have a fairly large rail network, the largest under single management in fact, set up during pre-colonial, colonial and immediate post-independence times. We do not need a 240,000 km rail network connecting 48 continental states, enough track to circle the Earth five times, as in the US. We need to augment existing rail services, and improve rail connectivity, particularly to our far-flung North-East.

I think it is a good news for both China and India, it will strengthen the connection between China and India, which will definitely facilitate bilateral trade in the future. Both China and India will benefit from it.

I hope that plan will be carried out, i am planning to travel to India after my graduation. I believe a highspeed railway will certainly make the journey more convenient and cheaper.
if they limit the number of routes between india and china to just ONE - it could be beneficial to india to let the indian people see just how far ahead china is and just how much more it's people have benefitted without "democracy" and it will urge the indian people themselves to push for a change in system ....that shd be beneficial to india longer term -

but more thañ one route becomes a military issue for china to transport troops

Railway eyes rail link to China

PATNA: The Indian Railways is studying a proposal to construct a high-speed rail link which will ultimately link the country with China in the future. China has too shown a keen interest to have rail link with India through Manipur areas. At present, China is carrying out a major railway project on its borders to establish a link with India. The proposed rail link between these two giants of Asia is likely to improve further business and trades between them.

According to a Railway Board official, the Indian Railways has already started its initial preparations to provide a rail link on the Jiribam -Moreh route linking Manipur and Myanmar. The railways has been laying broad gauge ( BG) rail lines from Jiribam in south-western Manipur to Moreh on the border of Myanmar, he said, adding this route will connect with the proposed track link being built on the India-Myanmar borders.

The Board official said that an established rail link between India and Myanmar is bound to help these two countries for carrying more shipment and transportation of goods easily to China. According to a report, India s largest trade partner is China in Asia registering about $ 60 billon worth trades last year alone, he said.

According to sources, the railways considers Myanmar as an important regional hub for the railways connecting China and India. China has been trying for long to have its south-western regions develop rail ink with parts of Myanmar.

India is equally keen to make trans-Asian rail project successful in the larger interests of both China and India, sources said, adding the Indian Railways has worked out its plan under the Look East policy providing rail link through Silchar-Imphal-Moreh route to China. According to sources, the railways has decided to complete two major rail projects in the eastern region. While it will develop outskirts of Imphal city for road purpose, it is keen to make Moreh a centre place for import and export.

China wants to build a high-speed rail link to most of the south-western cities, including New Delhi, sources said. Recently, China reached an agreement with several Central Asian countries to go ahead with the ambitious trans-Asian rail project connecting it directly to India, Pakistan, Iraq, Singapore, Russia and other European countries.

However, China s most important proposal is to build a rail line from Kunming located in south-western Yunnen province in Myanmar to New Delhi, sources said.

China is rebuilding the Silk Road with high-speed railway, imagine a train from Europe, Turkey, Iran, ..stans, to China, then Japan or Singapore.
It's an interesting idea, but seems politically difficulty a bit.

When China gets hostile, all they need to send their soldiers in the train and mamta will welcome them with garlands

Dumbest idea ever. Not only China is hostile but also killing our markets with their products. And we thinking of offering them in roads. Wonder which nut came out with that idea ??

The India line is a branch line, the main line is China, ..stans, Iran, Turkey which in accordance with the ancient Silk Road.
You can check the track gauges, Europe, Turkey, Itran, China, Korea are all 1435, Russia, ..stans are 1520, yours and Pakistan are 1676, you are isolated gauge island relatively. Inviting India is a friendly action from China.

Its very obvious that the main reason is to increase trade between the two nations that this plan has been mooted by the Chinese. But if this really happens, which I don't think will anytime soon, it will lead to more dumping of Chinese goods in Indian markets, and all trade benefits will be one sided, i.e. benefiting China. This is anyway is a very huge project and will probably take a decade to develop completely.

Think chinese are planning to use our own rail route capture us if at all we fight a war with them. I personally think that we should not allow this plan of the PLA to succeed.
