Well the crux of the article is US fed a snake knowingly. China realized that being counterweight to Soviets for the US will help it. It played very well and there in lies the lesson for India which finds itself in a similar position.

China EMBRACED Capitalism or rather SWITCHED sides NOT just to become a counter weight to the USSR

China had REALISED the massive and Inherent limitations of its communist economy

Before the economic reforms Chinese economy was in a very bad shape
and the Communist leaders had to PROVIDE a better standard of living to their people
or else China would have imploded

And USA didnt feed any snake whatsoever

Before 1978 China had developed ICBMs and H Bombs

SO USA knew what it was doing

Even today Russia is the primary military threat to USA because its huge
N arsenal Very advanced Missiles Strategic Bombers and Nuclear submarines

China is a PRETENDER to the throne which is occupied by USA

Let me talk about the items that I deal with. Fasteners. The Americans and Europeans source from China.

One of the largest selling size of a particular is $7-9 per thousand CIF from China. I did a study in US, UK and Australia. It's sold for between $150-300 per thousand. Same thing if manufactured in US would have cost what? Even 5 times the price would give handsome returns. Going to china was greed.

US manufacturers operate at such small margins that they will NEVER producce
a low tech product just for keeping the jobs at home

And more so if it is available at one fifth the price as you say

US wants to just somehow maintain its manufacturing sector

That it is doing with massive subsidies OR legislations like for example to Boeing and GM

Saving Low tech industries are not a priority for the CASH strapped US govt

Even steel industry which is the back bone of manufacturing sector
is surviving on US govt subsidies

But there too USA imports a lot of steel from outside

save its industry

This Shows the PRIORITY of USA

The future lies in GREEN technologies and NOT in making low tech products in
mainland USA not even for saving jobs

I am yet to see a western company operate on small margins. There are many western companies operating in my line of business. There is one company which has a turnover of 250 crores and makes 100 crores of profit in it. A US company sells products to a subsidiary established in India and expects a minimum margin of 50% from the subsidiary.

US companies have huge DOMESTIC costs ie employees salaries ,health insurance etc

And then there are taxes The income and profits earned abroad ONLY
make their otherwise ANAEMIC balance sheets ; a bit healthier

The IRS of USA is a blood hound it doesnt spare anybody or any company
unlike in India where all corporates evade taxes

Then there is another bug bear for US corporations Corporate Social responsibility

Add to it the expensive lobbying processes in Congress or law suits of ALL kind
including environmental racial discrimination and sexual harrassment ;
there is NO wonder that US corporates keep investing abroad

Yusuf you have posted a very good article

But the thing is that the ALL powerful US media US govt and US Congress can haul
apple's A$$ if they want

Maybe they have expressed their concerns privately

The 100 Billion reserves of Apple mentioned here are like a future war chest

The R & D costs for tech companies like Apple is very huge

And the jobs out sourced must be low tech ones

As far as I Know LAY OFFS are the most detested things in Corporate USA

Here I think Apple has just NOT recruited people it has not laid off people

i always found it strange that india is turning down america. international politics is not charity, you do what you need to do.
