Thank you for putting all the effort into sharing so many great pictures.

If anyone hasn't seen the video, I'd highly recommend it. Absolutely stunning display put on by China, very impressive and definitely worth at least a quick look over.

China's Military Parade Is an Act of Transparency
Posted:09/03/2015 12:29 pm EDTUpdated:09/03/2015 12:59 pm EDT

BEIJING -- Just like Mona Lisa, China's development of weapons and equipment has been colored by a dense mysticism. Since theNational Day Parade in 1999, the weapons and equipment displayed at the event have caught the attention of the world. To some degree, they reflect the latest developments in China's military technologies as well as its transparency of military strength.

In this year's parade to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory of the "War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War," the weapons and equipment shown are also a display of China's self-confidence and openness, since they are100 percent made in Chinaand84 percentof them make their first appearance. It marks their systematic, balanced and sustainable development.

Systematization of combat capabilities. Take the formations of air equipment as an example: They are composed of the main battle aircraft of the air force, navy aviation and army aviation, including not only fighters, bombers and carrier-borne aircraft, but also planes for early warning, aerial refueling, anti-submarine warfare, patrol and intelligence, as well as helicopters for transport, reconnaissance and combat missions. Gradually, China's air forces havedevelopedfrom being capable of assuming various tasks to being capable of conducting a complete system of operations, including long-range strike, air interception, air-to-ground attack, sea surveillance, etc. Such bottlenecks as early warning, aerial refueling and intelligence aircraft have been overcome and become indispensable "enablers" and "trump cards" in China's air force arsenal.

Balancing of offense and defense. As always, the formations of air defense, maritime attack and strategic strike are particularly eye-catching. Among the "stars,"HQ-9and their upgraded types are thethird-generation air defense missilesandcan rivalAmerican "Patriots" and Russian S-300 missiles, with some performances excelling the latter two. With HQ-9 as the core, China's land-based air defense capabilities now cover various types, and canintercept some ballistic missiles. Maritime attack capabilities, represented by"Yingji" anti-ship missiles, can pose a deterrent to an adversary, in terms of both range and precision. In addition, strategic strike capabilities, represented by"Dongfeng" ballistic missiles, are the cornerstone for national security. They possess both nuclear and conventional missiles, cover different ranges, and most importantly, are more sophisticated. Techniques fororbit maneuver, combined guidance, multiple warhead, decoy and solid fuelare being tested, while command and control, rapid reaction and mobile launching are maturing. Further, land-based long-range cruise missiles have enriched the means of strategic strike.

Sustainable upgrading of technologies. It is a common practice and developmental trend of world defense industries to upgrade the performance of existing platforms. F-16s have beenupgradedto the four types of F-16A, F-16B, F-16C, and F-16D. Through a major improvement of avionics devices and a minor change of structure, the third-generation aircraft have been upgraded to the3.5-generation. In the same vein, J-10B is an upgrade of J-10A, greatly improving the operational performance of theJ-10 series. The series ofHQ-9and Dongfeng missiles are similarlyupgradingto improve their tactical and technical performances.

However, China's enhanced transparency also lends an excuse for some to sensationalize the "China Threat." In fact, China has reiterated that it is an internationally accepted practice to showcase advanced weapons and equipment in a parade. It is a reflection of the level of military modernization which signals a positive energy that China will maintain world peace together with others and it is not directed against any other country.

The message it wants to send is this: Like the other countries and peoples that participated in the "World Anti-Fascist War," China and Chinese people cherish very much the victory of the "War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War."

Theparticipation of Mr. Ban Ki-moon, secretary-general of the United Nations, in China's commemorative activities also shows the world's mainstream perception of the victory.

Its historic significance has a particular meaning to China. Without that history, China would have no opportunity to display those self-developed weapons and equipment. Some would comment that the parade of the weapons and equipment is showing off"muscles."As a matter of fact, there is still a large gap between China's weapons and equipment and those of developed countries such as the United States. There is plenty of room to improve, and it is not worthwhile or necessary for China to show off. The parade not only commemorates the victory, but also demonstrates China's confidence and determination to maintain its achievements and to maintain peace in the world.

After attendance to the V-day parade ROK president visits historic Shanghai site

Interesting - founding of both South and North Korea can be traced back to China.

Following a renovation project, a historical site in Shanghai that hosted the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea during the Japanese colonial era will be reopened in time to welcome ROK President Park Geun-hye as a special visitor.

Shanghai hosted a large number of people from the Korean Peninsula after Japan started its colonial rule, and the Chinese city was also once home to Korean independence fighters.

As part of her China trip next month, Park will attend the reopening ceremony on Sept 4 of the office established in Shanghai.

Kim Jin-gon, consul for cultural affairs at the ROK consulate-general in Shanghai and director of Korean Cultural Center Shanghai, said:" The Japanese invasion brought great pain and misery to the Korean people, and the provisional government gave them hope. That's why the site is a must-see for visitors from the ROK."

At the time, the Chinese government and people offered great help and support to the Korean independence fighters, he said. Kim said Park's visit to the site serves as a call on the peoples of both countries to never forget history as "it is of great significance to both nations".

After China and the ROK established diplomatic relations in 1992, all five ROK presidents since then visited the site, with Park being the sixth to go there.

The provisional government is seen as "the spiritual basis" for the founding of the ROK, and in recent decades, visiting the site seems to have become a routine for every ROK president after taking office, Kim noted.

As i watched China's massive commemoration of the Victory over imperial Japan today one thing struck me, no it was not the presence of no less than 33 world leaders, no it was not the sheer scale of the extravaganza , not the 12000 boots marching in unison nor the 500 armored vehicles or the 11000km range ICBM's driving past the dais or the 250 combat aircraft flying past on display.
What struck me was the simple truth that every Chinese soldier there was using equipment manufactured and designed in China. From the JH-11 jets to the ZTZ-99 tanks and the DF-31ICBM down to the type QBZ-95 automatic rifles each piece of gear used was built in the PRC.
Now consider the truth that in 1947 when we got independence the Chinese were still fighting a bloody civil war, the fact that they had just come out of a bloody occupation by Japanese forces which had left them with non existent industrial capacity. On the contrary we had one of the highest number of industries in Asia at that time. Today our troops march with imported equipment and they march with equipment they can call their own, who do we blame?
Do we blame the political leadership that for the past six decades had pushed imports over domestic production? Do we blame the bureaucrats who have run once profitable Public sector defence industries into the ground through sheer inefficiency and nepotism? the Reservation system that ensures that non deserving candidates get to posts where they cause such irreparable damage to the nation? Or the sheer nonchalance of the common citizen who cannot see the degradation of his nation staring him in the face and rather prefers to worry about which inane actress dates which inane actor!
For all the talk about becoming a superpower we are getting nowhere until we get our MIC right!
