China to show latest generation of surface-to-air missile weapon system FK-3 at DSA 2014.
FK-3 Surface-to-Air Missile Weapon System is an all-weather medium-long range air defense weapon system, designed to intercept various types of air threats, including fixed-wing aircraft, cruise missiles, tactical air-to-surface missiles, armed helicopters, etc.

we were talking about this new SAM yesterday and it's new to us as well...it came from the same R&D unit which developed the FD2000(HQ9) LR-SAM, KS1/1A(HQ12) MR-SAM, FK1000 SR-SAM...

we thought this might be some Deep evolution varient of KS-1A. the info released in the news..

1. Max Range: 100 km (medium-long range--------MR-SAM KS-1A: 50 KMs max )
2. Combat Ceiling 50-27000m
3. Dual-mode homing (but we don't know what two kinds... the one for KS-1A is Command Guidance)

AFAIK, KS-1A wasn't inducted by the PLA even though the 1A version is far better than the earlier one.

But KS-1A was exported to Myanmar.. So this system might be for export as well

yes it should be an Export project...and it might be a SAM sys between FD2000 and KS-1A in terms of technical level and price..

the PLAAF varient of KS1/1A is HQ12 MR-SAM, which has entered service for around a decade..it is a low end SAM sys for cost-efficient replacement for the HQ-2 SAMs(PLAAF used to operate more than 100 battalions of such SAM, 700 launchers)...S300 and HQ9 are both expensive ...so PLAAF want some cheap options .and at that time ,the KS-1 for Export purpose has just finished the development. so with some improvement for specific request. KS-1 passed the national test and got the PLAAF codebname -HQ12

basicly ,HQ12 could be know as a Deep evolution of HQ2 ( second Gen of HQ-2 SAM catalog (MR-SAM), so the codename HQ12 was given...and other examples: HQ6 & HQ16 & HQ26(3 generations), HQ7 & HQ17 )...

the main feature:
1. new guidance station with PESA radar
2. All solid propellant missile( HQ2 is Liquid propellant powered)
3. using the same command guidance system as HQ2 for cost control and personal transfer training.
4. simliar operation procedure and maintance requests to HQ2 sys...

a typical HQ12 Launch site--6 launcher with 12 missiles ready to fire(double the number of HQ2 sys).such site means HQ12 is a Point defence SAM sys and in china it is deployed in relatively Low threat direction ...

KS-1A has a range of 57 Kms. The KS-1 was probably rejected due to the poor manoverability of missile as low as 5g.

what I said about the relation between FK-3 and KS-1 is our preliminary judgment...
unfortunately, we couldn't see the whole missile in that image, which leave us no way to judge whether FK-3 missile's origin or a totally new one..

Guide rail type launch or container Launch is not the the way to distinguish KS-1 or KS-1A system...actually both KS-1 and KS-1A has the two kinds of launchers . KS1---》KS-1A means the improvement of the missile and electronic sub-sys...

1. KS-1A's Max engage range is 50 KM (not 57 KM) ,KS-1's is less than that.
2. 5G is the limit of the target's manoverability
3. so far only two varients of KS-1 sys were revealed...it's too early to call anything what we have seen as KS-1C...

we got to know 'KS-1' around 18 yeas ago. the news of the time said KS-1 and QW-1 MANPAD might be chosen by Malay Armed force...
but it seemed that deal didn't happen. so many years later, Myanmar became the first international customer of this AD sys finally ...

the KS-1 is always under development and evolution, it has been displayed on Airshow China for eight times (held every two years, I attended three of them)...I could notice the change and difference on different year's Expo.

The fact that KS-1 could only intercept low manovering target is supported by missile's early stages of development.
But then its radar is too weak for BMD role

Also if it was an ABM then the altitude is quite less.

KS-1 don't have the ability for ABM..

1. the limited top speed
2. the simple homing mode: command guidance
3. the ability of FC control radar and command post

all these limited the AMB capacity...it is low end SAM in PLA AD system and undertake the Anti-Aircraft missions mainly ( the 500m of lower altitude bound also limits the anti-cruise missile ability)...
