BEIJING: By a strange coincidence, Chinese engineers have achieved the much awaited feat of blasting open the last of the rocky obstacles to create a long tunnel in the Tibetan county of Motuo across the Arunachal Pradesh border with India on a day when premier Wen Jiabao landed in New Delhi. The feat is bound to influence the border discussions during Wen's visit.

The Chinese government said the tunnel is meant to link the last of the isolated counties with rest of the country to ensure its development. It will also enable easy transportation of men and equipment across long distances to the border in Arunachal, which China claims to be its own.

Indian observers said the new 3.3 kilometer tunnel, which connects a 117-km long highway to Bomi country, provide additional support to Chinese armed forces. The move is bound to aggravate India's worries as Motuo is the point where the Brahmaputra enters India.

The official CCTV television carried reports of celebration with workers dancing and tossing around in the tunnel but did not mention that it was next door to India.

It is also a rare case of a government going to heavy expenditure to connection a population of just 11,000 who live in Motuo county in eastern Tibet. China recently built the fifth civilian airport in Tibet and announced plans for established the world's highest airport at 14,553 feet in the region by 2011. Plans are also afoot for laying six new railway lines in the region.

Its going to be a repeat of 1962 . on one hand chinese are trying to build a relationship and on the other hand are building tunnels so close to the border. I dont see any purpose other than to use them to launch surprise attacks. We wont even know what hit us.

Very True Shash, when i joined this forum i told that if China has to strike India, it will be between 2010 to 2020 bcoz after that we will be out of the reach of the chinese. And it seems all the developments after that re-affirms that stand of mine that a 1962 is in the making. On the other side we are being engaged in billions worth trade deal so that we don't smell their covert designs. And you know our leadership, once given a symphatetic statement by any chinese leader will give them dreams to wonder and forget the past.

India Need to be wary of Chinese designs....!!!

I hope our government-who-begged-terrorists-to-earn-Western-kudos is able to see this too. Although I have a feeling that they've already tied down the hands of Indian Army by slowing down Howitzer acquisition and light tank induction. Sometimes I wonder whether we really have a government that is elected by us (especially when Congress is in power) or they are simply puppets of either USA and China sitting pretty.

There is always a solution to everything. Tit for Tat. But our politicians are too busy with scams rocking our country. They dont have time for external security.

u guys again overhyped implication of infrastructures. Motuo County is inaccessible for over half a year.

This place is very much untouched by any common human enterprise. The reason being its location in one of the most inaccessible parts of not only China, but also the world. Getting to the Motuo County is by no means a fun journey; you have to pass through the frozen mighty Himalayan routes and must cross a 200 meter long suspension bridge in the way!

Motuo in the Tibet Autonomous Region is the last isolated county in China. But that's about to change. The area is about to be linked to the outside world. A highway is being built and should be completed before 2012. The most crucial part of the project, Galongla Tunnel, was just completed when explosives ripped through the end of the 3,310-meter tunnel.

Workers are doing the final preparations. 50 kilograms of explosives are installed to open the final two meters of the tunnel.

At 10 am Wednesday morning, the explosion goes ahead as planned.

Smoke fills the tunnel.

Three safety workers check if the explosives are fully exploded.

Then excavators move towards the spot.

One hundred meters. The debris forms a small mountain. The machinery approaches the hole to check if the roof is loose.

A hole of 70 cubic-meters is opened.

The next job is to get rid of the debris.

A small hole can be seen from here.

The final work is done to get rid of the loose rocks from the roof of the hole.

Leaders announce the success of the opening of the tunnel.

Half an hour after the explosion, the two teams from each side of the hole successfully meet together.

813 days of efforts have paid off.

The largest obstacle to entering Motuo is removed now.

The completion of the tunnel means Motuo will soon be linked to the outside. The highway is scheduled to be finished by the end of 2011.

The more tunnels they build, the greater will be their need to guard them.

Tibetans will be delighted!
