BEIJING: An undergraduate student in Beijing's prestigious Renmin University has caused an uproar by exhibiting her nude photographs and claiming that she nude models to pay her school fees.

She enraged the university by holding an exhibition of her nude photographs within its premises last month. The university tried to block the exhibition , entitled "Who am I?", and also persuade websites from displaying them. On Monday, the 19-year old Su Zizi took a step forward holding a press conference to tell journalists what prompted her to enter the profession as a "body artist" .

"I started it nine months back because I needed money for my fees, and to pay my grandmother's medical bills," she told TNN in an interview at the 798 art district on Sunday . "But now, I am attracted by the possibility of growing as a body artist," she said.

She has also exposed the inequities in Chinese society and the hidden underbelly of art circles where nude modeling can be both art and pornography. She had appealed to the local government for help to pay her fees, but was coldly turned away, she said. She found nude photography pays a lot more than any part-time job a student can aspire for. Her initial contract was for 10 sessions at 500 yuan (Rs 3300) each.

But a mature Su Zizi has now learnt that antagonizing authorities is not good for business . "I think the university tried to block my pictures in order to protect me," she said. She also refused to reveal the name of city officials whom she tried to meet, without success , for help to pay her fees.

So, what promoted her to give interviews and discuss her modeling career with the media . "I see the media as a vehicle to take my career forward," she said. She has strong views about photographers in the business. "Amongst the photographers , there are true artistic photographers but there are also hooligans who pretend to be artists," she said.

I don't see anything wrong with her photos. It is not explicit nudity.

In a competitive society that is emerging into 'modernity' (depends on what one feels is modern, most oriental societies including Indian, feel that copying wesern modes is modern), and where there are inequities (as in India too), one has to have money to pay for quality education.

The girl was merely trying to ensure that she has a future, even if meant being. what is so interestingly called, 'body artist'.

She should be applauded for her daring to make a life and future for herself battling against the odds.

She could have gone into prostitution too to make ends meet. She didn't!

I feel sorry for her predicament, but then that is life and a fact in most emerging countries.

Its not complete nude ... doesnt qualify as pornographic. Most top models pose that way and they aint branded as porn stars.

China loves to over react as usual. They need to look at their Asian porn industry that is thriving.

Body artist is great. For tuition needy students receive a loan or a subsidy in China enough to cover 'basic' expenses. College education was almost free in China probably until 1990. After then a token amount was charged. My father received a subsidy (rice) from his school in old days.

Ohimalaya, why be apologetic?

You should be proud of this girl. She is funding her education by herself and not going for easy bucks as in the case of prostitution, secondly, she is not doing this to lead a high society lifestyle, instead become educated and have higher qualification, and lead a decent life in the future!! :)

Guess what would happen if someone from India did the same here ?? Utter mayhem, I suppose ! :)
But this girl is brave, and in the end its gonna benefit her, her family and her future, so why not ? Life is challenging, and we don't have the slightest idea of the plight that a common man or woman goes through everyday, just to meet their basic ends in most of 3RD world countries.

I don't get u. What apologetic? That's her life and her choice. U don't understand Chinese - we're quite open. My post is only to explain how Chinese students get through if they're in need. Besides u confuse me further by referring to 'prostitution' which's totally irrelevant.

For a woman to do that is self-humiliation. But she has braved times and people to pay for her school fees. She's got an iron will. There are news of women in the west too, who list ads on classifieds auctioning their virginity to the highest bidder in order to pay tuition fees.

Could you explain as to what this is all about?

Why did she do it and why does she state that she has taken to this to pay her college fees?
