(Reuters) - China said on Friday it had lodged an official protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to a border region claimed by both countries.

China disputes the entire territory of Arunachal Pradesh, calling it south Tibet. Its historic town Tawang, a key site for Tibetan Buddhism, was briefly occupied by Chinese forces during a 1962 war.

"The Chinese government has never recognized the so-called 'Arunachal Pradesh'," a statement on the Chinese Foreign Ministry's website said on Friday.

It said Modi's visit was "not conducive to the overall development of bilateral relations".

Modi visited Arunachal Pradesh on Friday to inaugurate the opening of a train line and power station. He did not mention China but pledged billions of dollars of investment to develop infrastructure in the region.

"I assure you that you will witness more development in the state in the next five years than it has seen in the last 28 years," Modi said, addressing a huge crowd.

Faster transport links and exploitation of Arunachal Pradesh's hydro-electric potential are the keys to fighting poverty and bringing about rapid development in the frontier state, he said.

In January, China objected to statements by Japan's foreign ministry supporting India's claim to the region.

A visit by U.S. President Barack Obama to India in January was widely seen as a sign Modi is moving closer to the United States, to offset rising Chinese influence in Asia and, in particular, intensifying activity by the Chinese navy in the Indian Ocean.

I say it's time for India to draw a line in the sand and be vocal about its firm stance on territorial integrity. Arunachal Pradesh is India and it is not on the table for negotiation. Previous governments were weak and kept Arunachal Pradesh isolated and unconnected from the mainland. India never tried to integrate that state and this is why China thinks it still has a chance.

Tell China to get lost.

Build your military to a level where China is unable to,do anything except loose face. If they still do not listen then cut the trade to a minimum.

You cannot have your cake and eat it too.

China's proxy Pakistan is learning the hard way that tough India is a hard nut to crack. The same lesson is applicable to China too. If China intrudes several kilometers in Ladakh, then immediately send your troops to go into China controlled territory. They will get the message.

It's funny that China thinks Modi's visit was "not conducive to the overall development of bilateral relations".

What a bunch of bullshit! Of course it isn't conducive because you want to develop the bilateral relations on your own goddamn terms. These terms are totally ridiculous and no sovereign nation, let alone one as powerful as India, should ever agree to them. India needs to set the tone in bilateral relations by first setting certain things off the table. Territorial integrity is one of them. NO compromise and no bullshit weakness. Modi has to put it in the clearest terms possible that Arunachal Pradesh is not disputed territory.

Chinese SOP. We can live with it as long as they don't indulge into any misadventure along the border. They did the same when ex PM S. Manmohan Singh visited AP.

China is a threat to world peace. They have border disputes with almost all their neighbours. India should conduct military exercises in arunachal and tell china the border is non-negotiable.

China summons Indian envoy over Narendra Modi's Arunachal visit

BEIJING: Chinese vice-foreign minister Liu Zhenmin on Saturday called in India's ambassador to China, Ashok K Kantha, to lodge a "stern representation" over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Liu expressed "strong dissatisfaction and staunch opposition" to the Indian side's insistence on arranging the visit by its leader to what he called "the disputed area" on the China-India border.

Modi visited Arunachal Pradesh on Friday to attend its 23rd State Foundation Day.

The Chinese embassy in India lodged a representation with the Indian authorities over the visit on Friday night.

"The Chinese government has never recognized the so-called Arunachal Pradesh," Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a news release on Friday.

During the meeting with ambassador Kantha, vice-foreign minister Liu pointed out that this act by the Indian side "undermined China's territorial sovereignty, right and interests", the Xinhua report said.

He said such an act by the Indian side artificially amplified differences between the two countries on the border issue and thus went against the principles and consensus that the two sides reached on properly addressing the issue.

Liu reiterated China's "consistent and clear-cut stance on the China-India border issue", saying the Chinese government "has never recognized the so-called Arunachal Pradesh unilaterally set up by the Indian side".

It was "an universally recognized, unevadable fact that significant disputes do exist on the eastern section of the China-India border", Liu said.

He emphasised that China placed importance on developing relations with India. He said the two countries, as neighbours and the top two developing countries in the world, shared broad prospects on cooperation at various levels.

Liu expressed the hope that the Indian side would treasure the sound momentum in the growth of bilateral relations, march toward the same goal with China and abide by the important consensus on the border issue.

Liu called on the Indian side not to take any action that might complicate the border issue and stick to the general orientation of resolving the issue through bilateral negotiations to maintain the overall growth of bilateral relations.

Modi, who arrived in Arunachal Pradesh's capital on Friday, flagged off the Naharlagun-New Delhi Express by pressing a button at a function held in Indira Gandhi Park in Itanagar.

The Prime Minister hoped the boost in communications through the railway would propel growth and development in Arunachal Pradesh and other parts of the northeast.

Modi, who was accompanied by Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu, minister of state for railways Manoj Sinha and minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju, also inaugurated an intercity train between Naharlagun and Guwahati and laid the foundation stone of a 132KV power transmission project and another project to provide pure drinking water to the residents of the capital town.

President Pranab Mukherjee's visit to the state last year had also drawn sharp reactions from China, which has often laid claim to the state.

Pay her back in kind, yes but how? Xinjiang? Tibet? I'm afraid that card ain't gonna work. You see, unlike CHina, India lacks the balls to play that card. Moreover, China clearly has the upper hand as an emerging superpower in her own right, and a global economic heavyweight second only to the US. India is weak and pathetic even, let's face it. No one really takes her seriously and she herself doesn't really take her foreign policy seriously. India tries to please everyone judging by the balancing act you often see her put up. Well it's a necessity in order to secure peace during times when you lack the capacity to go to war and India most certainly lacks the capacity for a sustained all out war. India needs to grow and set her house in order. The best way to respond in kind is to first build yourself up so that you can match your opponent. This is the sad reality of India today.

China gotta do what China gotta do..
They protest.

Its time we stop caring about what the say about Indian territories. CHina wont escalate things out of proportion that can hinder their Projected "Peaceful rise".

Countries around china has to escalate things in thier favour while China slows down and there is a restructure. There are things China can handle and there are things them cant.

Firstly, obvious ly 90% is our part-that's good because simply on our own we can solve at least 90% of the matter. That is to say double - up on the speed of developing our arms industry & equally important the actual deployment in AP.. . . Continue to take tough measures to remove babuswho are standing in the way of development . . , . . . .

Gradually stop fawning up to china.. ...we had to in the past as we had such great inefficiencies in the system and china also did the same when. they were with the soviets ... but now its' time to adjust accordingly- - . - . gradually change our diplomatic language._will take decades

Basically I might be re-writing what you had already.... except your last sentence

that's where l disagree . - - - - - . instead of being a sad reality I. would call it a great opportunity. .. . and fortunately this was not lost in 1962

They always protest during PM/President/Army Chief visit.

Modi should take-off from Tawang for his Beijing visit in May. And then world will know who has balls or bayonets.

I agree with you whole heatedly. Every move made by their PLA dominated CCP has backfired whether it was oil rigs in SC sea or their stand against Japanese Islands, export of rare earth metals to Japan has led to reopening of mines in other parts of the world. In short their foreign policy has been a failure as for as I am concerned.

India should do military exercises and build nuclear missile silos in arunachal. If china objects, India should incite unrest in occupied Tibet. :india:
